Harper's Old General Store is the oldest continuously running general store in West Virginia.
In fact, Harper's is one of the oldest operating businesses in the state. To this day, the store looks very much the same and is owned and operated by the same family.
It was built in 1902 by J. M. Harper, the current owner's great grandfather.
The store served the needs of the local farming community. The Harper family has roots in the Seneca Rocks area that go back ten generations, something they share in common with many local residents.
To this day, history abounds in the store. You can still see many antique items from the edifice's former life around the store.
The store has an antique cash register, metal ceilings, the original shelving, and the original hardwood floors, which require regular oiling for protection. The architecture hearkens back to the turn of the century, exemplifying craftsmanship throughout.
Inside you can find camping supplies, souvenirs, and even snacks.
Here, comfort food reigns... and so do outstanding views. It's said that this lovely dining destination offers one of the finest views in the Seneca Rocks area. The Front Porch always serves up a memorable experience.
The restaurant serves sandwiches and pizza, which people say are especially tasty after a day of climbing.
Indulgent and filling, these dishes will quench your appetite and will leave you with a bit of the warm and fuzzies... just as southern-style comfort food is meant to do.
As you eat, you can see one of the best views in West Virginia: Seneca Rocks.
Seneca Rocks is the only "true peak" in the state, and popular with rock climbers. If you bring binoculars, you can see the climbers from the restaurant. Any visit to this general store is memorable and rewarding... this is truly a bucket list worthy destination.
Harper’s is located at the intersection of Rt 55, Rt 28 and Rt 33 in the community of Seneca Rocks in Pendleton County. This fascinating destination is full of charm, and it’s well worth the trip. What is the oldest business in West Virginia?
There is a lot of history in The Mountain State, from our many architectural gems to our natural landmarks. However, long-standing businesses offer a fascinating take on history like no other landmarks do. They’re almost living entities, able to tell the tales of yesteryear through their operations. The Greenbrier is perhaps the oldest operating business in West Virginia… and one of the oldest inns in America, having been founded in 1778.
Are there any classic general stores in West Virginia?
Believe it or not, Harper’s Old Country Store isn’t the only historic general store in The Mountain State. The Lost River General Store and Long Mountain General Store are two that belong on your bucket list!
What are the weirdest places in West Virginia?
The weirdest places in W.V. are doubtlessly our roadside attractions! You’ll spot the World’s Largest Teapot and even George Washington’s bathtub in West Virginia. Prepare to embrace our quirky state, because you’ll grow to love it.
