The Davenport Hotel in Spokane is renowned for its luxury, historic charm, and ghostly apparitions.
The historic Davenport Hotel is a local icon and one of the most haunted hotels in Spokane, Washington. For over a century, this original Davenport location, (there are now five in the collection), has been known for its unparalleled luxury and award-winning hospitality. But among locals and frequent visitors, the Davenport is also famous for being a haunted hotel in Spokane. If your curiosity is getting the best of you, read on to learn why this landmark is one of the most haunted hotels in Spokane. Is the Davenport Hotel haunted? Let's find out.
The haunted Davenport Hotel was built in 1889 when a young man named Llewellyn Marks "Louis" Davenport arrived in Spokane.
Mr. Davenport opened a waffle restaurant, which eventually became the original Davenport Hotel in 1914. Mr. Davenport lived in Suite 1103 until his death in 1951. He loved living there -- in fact, he was known to habitually wake at 3 a.m. and walk around the hotel in his bathrobe and slippers, making sure his guests were safe and comfortable.
Over the years, the property has been renovated and modernized, but it still maintains many of its historic charms.
Of course, back then, it was considered to be quite contemporary. This haunted hotel in Spokane was the first hotel with air conditioning, a pipe organ, a central vacuum system, housekeeping carts, and accordion ballroom doors.
These days, the haunted Davenport Hotel is a prime spot for lavish wedding receptions and other events...
As you can, the rooms and suites and comfortable, cozy, and spotless. During the off-season, the rooms tend to be more affordable too.
But of course, a hotel this old is bound to have some ghost stories, and this one is no exception.
Several guests and plenty of employees working the night shift have reported seeing a ghost-like figure roaming the halls in a bathrobe and slippers. Apparently, Mr. Davenport still cares about his hotel guests. Hence, this is why this historical landmark is one of the most haunted hotels in Washington state.
But the main spirit believed to be here is that of poor Ellen McNamara, a rich widow from New York who crashed through a skylight and fell to her death in 1920.
McNamara briefly regained consciousness and was examined by a doctor, but she ultimately died at the hotel. Apparently, she never left. Today, it isn't uncommon to spot an apparition of a woman dressed in 1920s clothing, peering curiously over the balcony in this haunted hotel in Spokane.
And while Mr. Davenport and Ms. McNamara seem to be the most common ghost sightings here, there have also been tales of vanishing bellhops and invisible cigar smokers throughout the haunted Davenport Hotel.
