You’ll Want To Spend The Entire Day At The Gorgeous Natural Pool In Washington’s Deschutes Falls Park
Deschutes Falls Park is one of nature’s loveliest works of art, tucked at the end of Bald Hills Road, just outside Yelm, Washington. The park was established as private property in the 1920s by its second owners, Frank and Helen Noreen until it was purchased by Thurston County in 1992. Today, we can all enjoy the 27-foot falls that cascade into the Deschutes River.
There’s no denying that Deschutes Falls is the nucleus of the park, but on your easy 1.3 mile hike to the natural pool at the hem of the falls, you’ll notice immediately that the surrounding nature and scenery contribute to the park’s storied history and charm.
In addition to the waterfall, scenic views, and various amenities, Deschutes Falls Park features a 400-foot gorge and two primary trails—one below the falls, offering the best views of the gorge and river, and a higher trail where wading in the water is possible.
While most of the water that plummets into the Deschutes River race through the deep gorge, there are a series of smaller falls that flow down unspoiled green slopes into several refreshing natural pools, which are perfect for cooling down in the summer.
The water has lovely emerald hues, but depending on where you stand along the banks, it may appear deeper or lighter, both of which are breathtaking and worthy of admiration.
Regardless of the color, you can be assured that once the sun filters through the trees and plants a soft kiss on the water, the ensuing sight is nothing short of mesmerizing.
