You Won’t Believe What These Old Gas Stations In Virginia Have Been Converted To
Gas stations and food…unless you’re talking about the occasional road trip snack, these two topics don’t really go hand in hand. Surprisingly, here in Virginia, you might be surprised to learn that a handful of fine eateries were once functioning gas stations. Here are five examples that should be promptly added to your dining bucket list:
1. The Art of Coffee (Montross)
The Art of Coffee
This former gas station has since been converted into a beautiful art gallery and coffee house. Served here are some of the most fresh breakfast and lunches that you'll find in the area. Photographed above is the Monet Sandwich, with a side of delicious pasta salad. Also be sure to try the Hazelnut Latte, one of their specials. The only semblance of the former gas station is the size of the building and the bay doors which used to function as part of the service station. The Art of Coffee is located at 15722 Kings Hwy, Montross, VA 22520.
2. Crosby's Crab Company (Manassas)
Once upon a time, Crosby's Crab Company was a modest gas station found along Route 234 in Manassas. Today, this building maintains the look of a gas station but is actually known for a much tastier commodity: fresh crabs. If you're looking for authentic Virginia seafood, this is your stop. Most of the food is intended for take away or cook at home, as space inside is limited. If you're just passing through, you can order a crab cake sandwich and enjoy it at one of the picnic tables outside. Location: 14718 Bristow Rd., Manassas, VA 20112.
3. The Bistro at Market and Grove (Petersburg)
The formerly empty service shop in Old Town Petersburg has made quite an impressive turnaround. This beautifully-decorated space is where many gather for some of the finest cooking in the area. Among the many menu items are spinach and artichoke cheeseburgers, ribeyes, grits, and crab cakes. Address: 422 N Market St., Petersburg, VA 23803.
4. Car Wash Cafe (Kilmarnock)
In the case of Car Wash Cafe, the establishments hasn't made the total conversion but stills offer the best of both worlds. While your car is being washed, you can come inside and enjoy some fine cooking. Favorites here include blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict, and cheeseburgers. The location of the Car Wash Cafe is 481 N Main St
Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
5. Berret's Seafood Restaurant (Williamsburg)
This tap house grill is a must-try for anyone in the Williamsburg area. A converted Esso gas station, Berret's is now known for its incredible seafood. From she-crab soup to local monkfish, this place has you covered. The drink selection also includes local brews. Photographed above is the delicious bacon-crusted tilapia entree. This unique restaurant is located at 199 S Boundary St., Williamsburg, VA 23185.
