7 Attractions in Vermont That Are the Largest in the World
Vermont is home to several world-record-holding attractions, including the largest underground marble quarry and the tallest filing cabinet.
We've all heard that old saying that the best things come in small packages, and our little state proves that cliche is right and, well, wrong with a few HUGE things of our own. That's right. These are the largest things in Vermont, and as a matter of fact, some are the largest in the world. Do you know any other things we have that are bigger - and better - than anywhere else? (If you do, nominate them.) Here are seven of the world's largest things in Vermont.
1. The World's (Second) Largest Grilled Cheese
If you want to brag about the cheesiest thing around, Cabot Creamery made the world's largest grilled cheese sandwich, weighing 320 pounds back in 2000. It measured five feet by 10.5 feet across the diagonal. Cabot was in the Guinness Book of World Records for this massive creation. However, Exodus and Iggy Chaudhry from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, shattered that record in October 2023. Still, Cabot Creamery holds the honor of making the largest grilled cheese in Vermont.
2. World's Largest Underground Marble Quarry
The Danby Quarry in Danby, Vermont, is the largest underground marble quarry in the world and is about 1.5 miles deep. While it's one of the most unique things to see in Vermont, there are no public tours at this time.
3. Vermont's Largest Gummy Bear
Vermont's largest gummy bear is a whopping 27 pounds, serves over 300 people, and contains over 36,000 calories. Not your average bear, right Yogi? You can find this massive gummy bear at Middlebury Sweets in South Middlebury, which also happens to be the largest candy store in Vermont with over 1,500 different products. It is, hands down, one of the best roadside attractions in Vermont.
4. World's Tallest Filing Cabinet
File this under awesome. This world's tallest filing cabinet in Vermont is over 40 feet tall and can be found on Flynn Avenue in Burlington. It was built in 2002 as a public art installation by artist Bren Alvarez and has since become one of the best roadside attractions in Vermont.
5. Vermont submitted an entry to the Guinness Book of World Records for the Largest Peanut Butter Cup
In 2013, the Village Chocolate Shoppe in Bennington submitted its giant peanut butter cup, vying for the world record. This confectionary delight weighed 230 pounds, was 59.5 inches wide, and used 70.1 pounds of milk chocolate. It took just over 159 pounds of peanut butter to make this masterpiece. Today, you can visit the shop and pick up a peanut butter cup the size of a cupcake. (One of my favorite things about living in Vermont, especially as someone with a sweet tooth, is all of the goodies - from peanut butter cups to Ben & Jerry's that are always just a short drive away.) Visit the official website of the Village Chocolate Shoppe for more information, or stop by the Facebook page of this chocolate shop in Bennington, Vermont.
6. North America's Largest Zipper
Barre is known as the granite capital of the world, and the largest zipper in North America is built out of large blocks of granite right from the town. At 74 feet long, it is located in an alley right on Main Street. The artist named it "Unzipping the Earth," which is appropriate since annual plants bloom within the blocks during warmer weather. You may have driven by this a thousand times and never knew to look. It's one of the most unique things to see in Vermont.
7. The World's Tallest Ladder Back Chair
This world record-breaking 19-foot chair has a history of bouncing back. The original was created in 1969 but over the years, it was affected by the elements and taken down in 2000. A new store, LaFlammes, purchased the land and made a replica. Unfortunately, LaFlammes is no longer in business, but the famous roadside attraction in Vermont can be seen in front of the Tri-State Area Federal Credit Union in Bennington.
