When most of us picture Vermont quarries, we think of the magnificent sight of the Rock of Ages location. Perhaps we envision jumping into the the Dorset quarry on a hot summer day. There is another amazing quarry in Vermont that is the largest in the world of its kind, and it's not the place to go if you're claustrophobic! Let's explore this underground quarry in VT.
The Danby Quarry in Danby, Vermont is the largest underground marble quarry in the world.
From the outside, it looks much like it did a century ago.
In fact, you enter the quarry through the same mining shaft that's been in use for over 100 years.
The well worn path leads the way to where the marble is mined.
Eventually you'll get to the spot which is a mile and a half underground!
This is where the magic happens.
The marble is cut to size and this facility can produce up to 4,000 square feet of marble per day.
The onsite production facility here just may be the largest in the country. When you pair it with the world's largest underground marble quarry, it's clear that this is a one of a kind place.
This may give you a better idea of how big it is.
Even the break room is underground.
Today some of the world's most beautiful marble still comes from the Danby Quarry.
You may have walked right on it and never knew where it came from.
Or maybe you've seen it in someone's kitchen. Martha Stewart chose Danby marble for her own kitchen countertops!
Perhaps you've marveled at it on a prestigious building such as the New York Public Library.
And it all started in little old Vermont.
