Historic landmarks are an important part of any state. These destinations tell a story and give you a glimpse into a time long ago. Grove Market on Main Street in Salt Lake City is one of these destinations. This is the oldest deli in Utah and has been a Salt Lake City tradition since 1947. It’s not only one place where you can enjoy good food, but you can also enjoy a piece of Utah’s history.
Grove Market actually dates back to the early 1940s. Pete Savas was a Greek immigrant who came to Utah and decided to build a small market. Construction began in 1945 and the doors to this market officially opened in 1947.
Unfortunately, Savas passed away in 1957, but his sons took over the business. The Savas family still runs the market today and has helped to shape it into a must-visit place to eat in Utah.
For the first 30 years, the market was simply that — a market. In 1970, a deli was placed inside. This is the oldest continually-operating deli in Utah and definitely worth a visit.
Grove Market’s deli serves a variety of sandwiches filled with all types of meat. You can always try something traditional on the menu like a turkey or ham sandwich.
There are more unique options as well like tuna, bologna, meatball, chicken salad, tomato and avocado, and more. There really is something for every taste bud.
The sandwiches are typically served on the deli’s Ambassador Roll, which is massive. However, you can always choose from delicious rye, wheat, pumpernickel, sourdough, or French bread if you desire. And if you are looking for something a little smaller, half-sandwich options are available.
No matter which sandwich you chose, each one comes packed with meat and toppings. You’ll have to open your mouth wide just to take a single bite.
There are also several hot food options on the menu if you are in the mood for something a little different like a hot dog, Polish sausage, or chili. If you want something fresh and light, try a garden salad or purchase a side of potato, macaroni, or pasta salad to complement your meal.
After you have ordered your sandwich, take a walk around the market and browse the various grocery items on the shelves. From sauces to mixes to drinks, there is plenty to choose from.
