Fall foliage transforms the Beehive State and creates an inspiring scene, but timing is everything to experience the vibrant colors.

There is something magical about fall. I love the cooler weather, the chunky sweaters, and the pumpkin spice everything. But my favorite thing about this time of year is the fall foliage. However, if you are like me and love to immerse yourself in the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows here in Utah, it’s all about your timing. So, when do the leaves change colors in Utah in 2025?

September 22 is the first official day of fall. Around this time, you will start to see signs of changing leaves in the Beehive State, but the real beauty is on its way.

By the first week in October, fall foliage will be at its peak in northern Utah. This is a wonderful time to plan a scenic drive. I highly recommend exploring Little Cottonwood Canyon and the Alpine Scenic Loop (my two favorite fall drives). And if you find yourself in Cache Valley, tackle one of the many trails in Logan Canyon or have a picnic at Tony Grove Lake—it's stunning here.

Peak fall foliage only lasts a few weeks, and by the middle of October, you may be too late. But don’t fret because southern Utah’s fall beauty is just getting started. By mid-October, southern Utah will hit its peak fall foliage. Don’t wait too long to see the changing leaves in this part of the state because by Halloween, the vibrant colors will have disappeared.

I recommend visiting Zion National Park when autumn's palette makes an appearance. This is my favorite time to visit this national park as you'll find it's much less crowded than the summer season. The Riverside Trail, for example, within Zion Canyon is easy, flat, and beautiful. It's also one of my favorite hikes within Zion National Park to view fall foliage. However, there are countless other areas for stunning autumn views. Even just a random pullout within the park can provide exceptional autumn scenes.

Fall in Utah truly is splendid. There’s just nothing quite like it. Mother Nature sure outdoes herself this time of the year.
