The Awe-Inspiring Beauty Of This Wyoming Byway Is Truly Captivating

Few things relieve stress like a nice, relaxing drive along a scenic byway, and Wyoming has quite a few of them to choose from.

One particularly beautiful stretch of road is so picturesque that it regularly draws travelers from around the state and across the nation. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway isn't excessively long, but it winds through some of the most enchanting scenery the Cowboy State has to offer. It's ideal for a leisurely Sunday drive that is tailor-made for stress relief and rejuvenation.

WY-296 is known as the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. At just over 45 miles long, it's the perfect length for an afternoon drive.

As you take in the captivating scenery, you'll physically feel your stress melting away.

This section of highway through the Wyoming wilderness was named for Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce chief who valiantly fought against the U.S. Cavalry to preserve his land and his people's freedom.

The byway is said to be the route Chief Joseph and his tribe took in an attempt to evade the cavalry and avoid being forced onto a reservation.

Summer and fall are the best times to road-trip this byway, though it is gorgeous any time of year.

It's even a nice drive in the winter.

Although snow usually forces the Beartooth Scenic Byway further north to close in the winter, the Chief Joseph Byway typically remains open. During the snowy season, it's common for travelers to spot deer and elk along the way.

The byway cuts a winding path through the Absaroka Mountains and the Shoshone National Forest.

There are stunning sights to see at every turn.

It's easy to leave your cares behind on this deceivingly short road that seems to go on forever.

Most everyone who has traveled this stunning scenic byway agrees that it is rewarding and unforgettable.

Even if you start your journey in Cody, the trip takes less than 90 minutes one way. You can either continue on to tour the Beartooth Scenic Byway (if the roads are clear) or turn around and enjoy more of the Chief Joseph Byway on the return trip.
