Wisconsin’s Rising Star: This Underrated City Is Ideal for Any Traveler

My favorite thing about Wisconsin is absolutely the stunning landscapes, but my second favorite thing is easily how fun it is to say our city names. Menomonee Falls. Oconomowoc. Waunakee. Sheboygan is one of the state's many incredible towns that has both a fun name and stunning landscapes, and it's one you'll want to add to your local travel bucket list. With a waterfront ambiance and small town feel, it's just so easy to unwind here! However, if you're visiting in the cooler months, you might want to grab your North Face jacket and prepare to bundle up. Nothing quite compares to that lake breeze!

With 50,000 residents, Sheboygan isn't exactly a small town. Nevertheless, it boasts that welcoming small town feel that just can't be beat. Located at the western shore of Lake Michigan and the mouth of the Sheboygan River, this spot first opened to American settlers in the 1830s. Before then, indigenous tribes got to admire the beauty of the local landscape. Nowadays, Sheboygan exudes a unique blend of laid-back lakeside charm and creative energy, earning it a reputation as the "Malibu of the Midwest."

As its nickname implies, Sheboygan is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, especially surfers who flock to its beaches to catch waves on windy days. The local culture reflects a deep connection to the water, with a thriving maritime heritage that includes fishing, sailing, and boating. Of course, winter slows the frequency of those activities quite a bit, but locals still love sitting back and admiring a good coastal sunset in the colder months. With 700 acres of city parks alone, there's no shortage of public spaces where you can kick back and appreciate the great outdoors.

While the gorgeous views may be the first thing to meet your eye in Sheboygan, the city is also a culinary hotspot, known for its rich German and Wisconsinite flavors. It's one of the best places in Wisconsin to get a good bratwurst, and oddly enough, it's also one of the few places in the Great Lakes where you can snag a pizza that's certified by Italy. Go for cheesy foods while you're in town if you're looking for a meal that's both authentically Midwest and refreshingly cosmopolitan, but don't be afraid to let your taste buds lead the way.

The city’s vibrant arts scene shines in its galleries, public murals, and cultural festivals, creating an inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is a super cool landmark that celebrates self-taught and contemporary artists, and elsewhere in town, the stunning and historic Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts showcases architecture and entertainment.

Speaking of entertainment, if you're a fan of golf, you're going to love the golf courses in Sheboygan. There are seven in town, and each has a distinct feel. What they all have in common, however, is the same lush greenery you'll enjoy throughout the community. That lushness is especially front and center at the local botanical garden, which is delightfully inspired by children's literature, and the charming James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden.

Of course, greenery in a northern state like Wisconsin is a summertime draw. Rest assured that it results in stunning foliage in the autumn months and some picture-perfect winter scenes once snow falls. Truly, this quaint community in Wisconsin is charming all year-round.

While nature is a constant draw for Sheboygan visitors, I'm partial to some of the man-made features, too. The Lottie Cooper, for example, is one of the most unusual draws in town. It's a ship that went down in 1894, claiming one life before it was reclaimed by Lake Michigan. In 1992, nearly one full century later, the ship's remains were rediscovered. A chunk was brought ashore for the public to enjoy, and it's one of the strangest roadside attractions in Wisconsin in a wonderful way.

Whatever brings you into Sheboygan, Wisconsin, it shouldn't be a surprise when you fall in love with the community. There's so much charm in this one area that it's plain to see why so many out-of-towners have chosen to make it their permanent home.

Sheboygan is a worthy road trip destination that offers a mix of relaxation and inspiration. The community blends its maritime heritage with a vibrant arts and culinary scene, earning it a reputation as a lakeside haven for surfers, foodies, and creatives alike... But it really has something to offer travelers of every type.
