History Of Bayfield
With a year-round population of fewer than 600 people, Bayfield is the the least populous incorporated city in Wisconsin. It was first platted - and honored with a post office - in 1856. It was named for the British admiral who surveyed Lake Superior in the 1820s. Prior to settlement, the area around Chequamegon Bay had been significant - and remains so - to the area's Ojibwe people. Several Native American communities remain in the area around the bay and on the Bayfield Peninsula. What is Bayfield, Wisconsin, known for? When immigrants first came to the town, they were attracted by the area's abundance of timber and fish. Eventually, sandstone quarrying became the predominant industry. All the while, wealthy families from cities like Milwaukee and Chicago would summer in Bayfield, where Lake Superior kept the air cooler during the dog days of July and August. Since the mid-20th century, however, tourism has been the area's main economic driver. Sailors, anglers, and folks looking to explore the Apostle Islands all use Bayfield as a jumping off point.

Best Time To Visit Bayfield
Summertime is wonderful in Bayfield - perfect for being out on the water and enjoying nature with a little less bite in the air. Even so, there's something pretty special about autumn in Bayfield. The fall foliage is popping, the bugs have abated, the crowds are thinner, and the sweaters have come out. And when October rolls around, it's time for the annual Bayfield Apple Festival. As much as I love summer, if I had to pick, I'd definitely say fall is the best time to visit and partake of the many activities in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Where To Stay In Bayfield
One point of pride in the community is that there are no chain hotels that operate in Bayfield, but that doesn't mean there's a lack of lodging (although it can get pretty tight during high season). Here are a couple of options you may wish to consider when planning your getaway, both of which are within easy walking distance of downtown Bayfield.
Hotel Pick: Old Rittenhouse Inn
The Old Rittenhouse Inn is the grandaddy of Bayfield lodging. Built as a luxurious summer home in the 1800s, it has served as a hostelry for more than half a century.
With historic, classic decor, the Old Rittenhouse Inn offers comfortable - and romantic - rooms and a commanding view of the harbor. Breakfast is included in the room rate.
Airbnb Pick: Suite with Superior Views
One of the best things about Bayfield is the views out over Lake Superior. And this one-bedroom, one-bath Airbnb does not disappoint.
This suite with Superior views comes with a well-appointed kitchen, modern amenities, and best of all, a deck from which to enjoy the stellar views.

When you visit, you may just want to relax and enjoy the lake breezes, but those who wish to learn more about this charming and historic town will be glad to know there are plenty of Bayfield attractions and sights to see.
Bayfield Maritime Museum
Bayfield has a long nautical history, and the keeper of that history is the Bayfield Maritime Museum. There, you'll find exhibits, displays, and artifacts relating to fishing, yachting, and Great Lakes shipping. It's always one of my favorite stops when I visit Bayfield.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Headquarters
The headquarters for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located right in the town's historic district. Pay a visit to learn more about the park, its history, and geography. The brownstone building that houses the headquarters is the former Bayfield County courthouse, which was built in 1884.
Bayfield Heritage Center
As far as preserving the history of Bayfield and Bayfield County, that is the purview of the Bayfield Heritage Association. But you can learn all about it with a visit to the Bayfield Heritage Center, the museum operated by the association. Given the area's small population, the center is incredibly well curated and thorough. Its exhibits are sure to have something to interest everyone, and you'd be remiss not to pop in and spend some time there.
Bayfield Activities & Attractions
What's always attracted folks to Bayfield, Wisconsin, is its history and nature. And when it comes to Bayfield activities, they tend to be rooted in these two elements of the area. Here's a trio of adventures that highlight both Bayfield's natural beauty and its long history.
Sail Lake Superior
Sailing is a big deal in Bayfield. Take one look at the marina and the boats on the water, and you'll know this to be true. But, if you're not a yacht owner, you don't have to be stuck on land when visiting Bayfield. All Hands Sailing offers several sailing packages, from a few hours on the water to multi-day excursions in the Apostles. It's a great way to get out and see the natural beauty for which this part of Wisconsin is renowned.
Paddle the Apostle Islands
Another popular way to get up close and personal with the rugged beauty of the Apostle Islands is a kayaking adventure. And Apostle Islands Rustic Makwa Den is one of the area's premier outfitters. Rustic Makwa Den offers trips of several lengths and for varying levels of skills in the Apostles. If you've ever wanted to paddle through a sea cave, here is your chance.
Take a Bayfield Ghost Walk
It's axiomatic that any place with a bit of history has accumulated enough souls for paranormal activity. With the long history of human habitation in this area, Bayfield is no exception. So, if you're a believer or a skeptic looking to be proven wrong, you'll definitely want to take this Bayfield Ghost Walk. A local guide will let you in on all the haunts, spirits, and poltergeists that still call Bayfield home.
Shops & Boutiques In Bayfield
For much of any given year, the number tourists in Bayfield outnumbers the number of residents - often by a lot. For this reason, much of the shopping opportunities you'll encounter cater more toward the touristy than the practical. You'll find some noteworthy boutiques like Roxanne's Gifts and Joanne's Scandinavian - neither of which have an internet or social media presence - along with your standard t-shirt and tchotchke shops. But there a few other standouts worthy of your time, as well, such as this trio of businesses.
Howl Downtown
Howl Adventure Center is located outside of Bayfield, where it runs a brewery, a coffee shop, and an outfitter. Howl's downtown outpost is scaled back, but it's a great place to pick up anything you might need for your outdoor activities in the area.
Lake Superior Scandinavian
If you're a lover of custom jewelry, you'll definitely want to pay a visit to Lake Superior Scandinavian. This shop's delicate, hand-crafted pieces make wonderful gifts for anyone you may have left at home - or keepsakes to remind you of your time in Bayfield. Be sure to check Lake Superior Scandinavian's socials while you're in town, as it sometimes offers workshops, where you can learn a bit of craft and then enjoy some discounted shopping afterward.
Apostle Islands Booksellers
The only shop I stop in every single time I visit Bayfield is Apostle Islands Booksellers. I mean, who doesn't love a good bookshop? And this one just oozes charm. Stocked with tons of locally-relevant titles, gift books, children's books, and beach reads, you're sure to find something to enjoy during your stay in town.
Restaurants In Bayfield
As with lodging, you'll find no shortage of excellent dining options in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Over the years, I've found some reliable favorites that I think you may like, as well.
Mannypenny Bistro
Mannypenny Bistro is my favorite breakfast spot in Bayfield. It serves up tasty, classic breakfasts at a fair price - and with good views. It's also open for lunch and dinner if you need a casual dining spot for later in the day.
Wonderstate Coffee
If you just need a jolt of java in the morning, the local outpost of Wonderstate Coffee is the place to get it. The shop also offers some bakery selections and grab-and-go items if you're also looking for a quick meal.
Starlit Kitchen
If you're looking for lunch on the go, I don't think you'll do better than Starlit Kitchen. This spot started as an artisan bakery, but it now offers soup, burritos, and sandwiches made on its fabulous breads. Although there is some seating outside, this eatery is take-out only and it's only open for breakfast and lunch. The hours do change with the seasons, so be sure to check them before you head over.
Pier Plaza Restaurant
When dinner time rolls around, head over to Pier Plaza. With good views of the harbor, even better drinks, and excellent, classic fare - steaks, fish, burgers, salads, etc. - you'll toddle home a happy sailor after your meal here.
Worth Noting: Tom's Burned Down Cafe
Though it's technically not in Bayfield, Tom's Burned Down Cafe has been an iconic, must-visit spot since 1992 when it... well, burned down. The owners never really rebuilt. Instead, they just put up a collection of tents, tarps, and scraps, and kept right on serving drinks. It's located on Madeline Island, just a ferry ride from Bayfield. The bloody marys alone are worth the trip over.
Nature In And Around Bayfield
Whether you come for the sailing, to explore the Apostles, or to just enjoy a book on a verandah with amazing views of Lake Superior, it is, ultimately, the natural beauty of the Bayfield area that drew you. Here are a few places where you can experience such beauty up close.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
The premier natural wonder in the Bayfield area is, of course, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. An archipelago of Northwoods islands fanning out into Lake Superior from the Bayfield Peninsula, the Apostles are ruggedly beautiful. Not only is the natural beauty stunning, but all of the lighthouses on the islands - there are several - have been collectively placed on the National Register of Historic Places and are worth seeking out in their own right. Although you can explore a bit from the mainland, in order to fully appreciate the Apostles, you'll need to take an excursion by some kind of vessel - kayak, sailboat, tour boat, etc. It's definitely worth it to do so.
Big Bay State Park
One way to get a feel for the beauty of the area without having to spend too much time on the water is paying a visit to Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island. You will have to take a ferry from Bayfield to reach it, but once there, you can hike the trails, explore the cliffs, and see the beauty of what Lake Superior has wrought.
Meyers Beach
If you drive 15 miles westward, across the peninsula from Bayfield, you'll come to Meyers Beach. This is one place in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore where you can hike the cliffs and see sea caves from the mainland. It can be incredible during cold winters when the lake has frozen solid, and it's possible to hike out the the caves over the ice. There are also outfitters on this side of the peninsula who can take you to the caves by kayak when it's not winter.
We certainly hope this Bayfield, WI travel guide, with all the wonderful sights to see, places to eat, and things to do in Bayfield, Wisconsin, has got you chomping at the bit, and you'll consider paying a visit to this charming Lake Superior town soon.
