5 Spots in Wisconsin We’re Especially Thankful for This Year

From ski resorts to supper clubs and everything in between, these are some of the best places to visit in Wisconsin.

Growing up just south of the Wisconsin border, escaping to the wonders of the Badger State was always a treat. A trip to Wisconsin meant cheese curds and a chance to get out in nature. As I got older, I always made sure to bring back a case of the famous Spotted Cow beer for my friends. I truly believe America’s Dairyland is one of the most underrated states in the country, and these are some of the best places to visit in Wisconsin that I’m particularly thankful for this year.

1. Devil's Head Resort - Merrimac

Devil’s Head Resort in Merrimac, Wisconsin, holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first place I ever put on a pair of skis. Today, I’ve skied all over the world. Yet I remember it all started at this small ski resort in rural Wisconsin. The ski resort is one of the best places for snow lovers in the Midwest. If you’re not a ski bunny, the resort offers access to plenty of outdoor activities in the summer, like golf, Devil’s Lake State Park, and rock climbing.

2. Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort - Wilmot

Living in Chicago, Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort was always a quick 90-minute drive away. As someone who always aches for the mountains, being able to enjoy a ski weekend so close to home always helped keep my sanity during the wintertime. Complete with a lodge and apres ski events, this local gem in Wilmot, Wisconsin, brought a taste of the mountains to the community and the greater Chicagoland area. Plus, there’s a stellar tubing hill for those not quite ready to put on a pair of skis.

3. Open Door Bird Sanctuary - Sturgeon Bay

Up in Door County, Wisconsin, the Open Door Bird Sanctuary is doing incredible work to protect local bird species. As an almost entirely volunteer-run organization, the sanctuary offers private guided tours and hiking trails for visitors to get up close and personal with local nature. After my winter tour, I left with a big grin on my face and a deeper appreciation for Wisconsin's nature.

4. Anaway Place - Richland Center

Hidden away in Richland Center, Wisconsin, Anaway Place is a quiet retreat. I brought my mom here a couple of years ago for a mother-daughter getaway. The property is scattered with seven unique luxury cabins across more than 80 acres of forested land. The surrounding community is very quiet. There are some walking paths, a couple of wineries, and of course, a local supper club called Honkers down the road. There isn’t much to do around here but enjoy the property, and that’s exactly why I love it.

5. Ishnala Supper Club

A legendary establishment in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, Ishnala Supper Club is easily one of the coolest supper clubs in the state. If you’re not familiar with supper clubs, they’re a Wisconsin tradition known for their casual yet cozy atmosphere. You’ll typically find comfort food on the menu, like prime rib and generous portions of potatoes. What makes Ishnala Supper Club so special is its layout. In addition to the restaurant, the property has a beautiful outdoor area that is surrounded by forest and ponds. You’ll frequently hear live music and can enjoy a cocktail on the patio while you wait for your table. This spot is extremely popular, so come early and expect to wait a couple of hours for your table.

Each of these five spots is one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin. I'm thankful to call this state my northern neighbor and to have access to such a wide variety of incredible experiences. Feeling inspired? Try planning your own Wisconsin trip using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.
