Most People Don’t Even Know This Little-Known Destination In Wisconsin Even Exists
Rowleys Bay in Door County, Wisconsin, offers a peaceful retreat with scenic nature, hiking trails, and paddling opportunities.
Is it possible to find a community in Door County that’s not swarmed with visitors on a summer weekend? It is, but you’ll need to head to a place that you might not have heard of - Rowleys Bay. This little corner of the county is not quite undiscovered, but it’s far removed from the county’s bustling villages. It’s a little slice of Wisconsin paradise - here’s what’s waiting for you in Rowleys Bay.
You’ll find Rowleys Bay on the “Lake Side” of Door County - the side facing east. You’ll take quiet inland, rural roads to get to this little hamlet.
When you arrive, don’t expect to find a busy downtown. Rowleys Bay is an unincorporated community. There’s not much here, and that’s part of the charm. But it’s been inhabited for a long time - it’s named after Peter Rowley, who settled here in 1835.
Visitors can explore the nearby Mink River Estuary, which is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic hiking trails. The estuary provides a habitat for a variety of bird species, including eagles, herons, and waterfowl. It’s a popular paddling destination.
There’s a pleasant resort here, as well as a campground and other vacation homes. It’s the perfect base camp for people who want to explore the area, but it’s also a nice place for day trippers.

Nature is the big attraction here. The nearby woods and wetlands are laced with hiking trails, and Newport State Park frames the other side of the bay - you can reach it by kayak on calm days, otherwise, you’ll need to drive north past Ellison Bay to reach the park entrance.
While Rowleys Bay draws visitors - especially paddlers - it offers a glimpse of what Door County was like before it was a top tourism destination. Take in the fresh air and wildlife and enjoy this hidden gem!
