No Need to Travel Far — This West Virginia Destination Feels Just Like the Ozarks
With awe-inspiring overlooks, lush forests, and tranquil waterways, this picturesque destination in West Virginia belongs on your list.
Tucked between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains, the Ozarks are a magical playground for nature lovers. The rugged wilderness, towering waterfalls, scenic drives, and overall natural beauty make these picturesque mountains a prime destination for outdoor adventure. Primarily located in Missouri and Arkansas, those folks are lucky to have such a dreamy destination in their backyards.
West Virginians are lucky, too, as the state is brimming with breathtaking beauty. We have awe-inspiring overlooks and lush forests that feel just like the Ozarks. That’s especially true for Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown. If you ask me, it’s one of the most beautiful destinations in West Virginia and the perfect dupe for the Ozarks. No need to cross state lines to witness nature at its best. Simply plan a trip to Coopers Rock State Forest to experience your slice of heaven, right here in West Virginia.
You can find Coopers Rock State Forest nestled in the gorgeous Appalachian foothills in the northern part of the state in Monongalia and Preston counties. The 13,000-acre playground is a favorite destination for locals but remains a hidden gem for folks visiting the area.
Not only is the forest known for the iconic overlooks over the Cheat River Gorge, but it’s also a destination for rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, birdwatching, rafting, and more. Its Ozark-like landscapes, featuring sweeping views and high sandstone cliffs, make Coopers Rock a bucket-list-worthy destination.
So, why should you skip the Ozarks for Coopers Rock? Well, since the Ozarks are over 800 miles away, you can save on gas and avoid hours of travel time. Plus, popular destinations like Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and Hawksbill Crag in Arkansas can get pretty crowded, especially during peak season. So, it makes no sense to drive out of state to an outdoor playground that rivals one in your own backyard.
The most popular spot inside the forest is the Coopers Rock Overlook. The massive rock outcropping featuring panoramic views and lush greenery reminds me of the Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area in the Ozark National Forest. The ADA-accessible overlook is a great spot for families, friends, and couples to soak up the mesmerizing landscapes. When standing here, it’s easy to see why West Virginia earned its nickname “Almost Heaven.”
If you prefer to avoid the crowds and have a quiet, picturesque spot to yourself, hike the three-mile Ravens Rock Trail. Similar to the iconic Hawksbill Crag, the most Instagrammable spot in the Ozarks, the trek leads to a massive rock outcropping with awe-inspiring views of the rolling hills and the river valley below. It’s one of those spots where you could sit for hours and get lost in time, marveling at nature’s eye candy.
What’s more? Coopers Rock has miles of multi-use hiking trails that meander through wild and rugged landscapes. Expect to see dense forest, tranquil streams, fairytale footbridges, boulder fields, large rock formations, hidden caves, and plenty of surprises along the way. Don’t miss the Coopers Rock State Forest Loop that leads you to a pretty pond, a historical site, boulder fields, and a cool rock tunnel. This five-mile trail is packed with adventure around every turn.
Unlike the Ozarks, Coopers Rock isn’t known for its towering waterfalls. Instead, tiny cascades and serene waterways dot several of the hiking trails. They’re ideal spots to take a break, enjoy a quick snack while listening to soothing nature sounds.
While there are lakes and streams inside the forest, the Cheat River is the main water attraction here. A haven for all kinds of recreational activities, water enthusiasts enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing on the river. Plus, the river provides opportunities for white water rafting, similar to what you’ll find at the Mulberry River in the Ozarks. Exploring the waterways is one of the best ways to enjoy a day in the forest.
Coopers Rock is a wonderful destination any time of year. In winter, the forest transforms into an enchanting wonderland and is popular for snowshoeing and skiing. In summer and spring, the trails light up with pretty little flowers, and the wildlife is plentiful then. But it’s during the fall when the forest really comes alive with vibrant colors. Scenic drives through the area are extremely rewarding. Leaf peepers will be delighted by the depth of colors that rival the scenery from the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway in the Ozarks.
Sure, you won’t find dramatic waterfalls or vast cave systems at Coopers Rock. But between its rugged wilderness, expansive vistas, rolling hills, and tranquil waterways, you’ll feel like you’re in the Ozarks. Chances are, this dreamy destination in West Virginia will become your new go-to playground.
