Anybody can walk into a grocery store and buy some syrup, often loaded with additives and fillers. But this one farm in West Virginia makes pure syrup, filled with nothing but what nature provides.
Cedar Run Farm, located near the town of Friendly in Pleasants County, produces and sells pure maple syrup with no additives or fillers - just the flavor of pure, distilled syrup.
The process begins by "tapping" one of the many sugar maple trees on the farm. Tubes are inserted into the tree to draw out its sap.
The sap is then brought to "The Sugar Shack" and added to the distiller, which draws out the water from the sap. This process of evaporation takes many hours.
Eventually, the process is complete and pure, natural syrup is extracted.
It takes roughly 52 gallons of sap to yield just one gallon of syrup. The Metz Family, who own the farm, all pitch in to make the syrup and collect the seemingly endless amount of firewood needed to keep the evaporator running.
Aside from maple syrup, the farm also grows Christmas trees and offers hand crafted furniture painted by Debbie Metz, the family's matriarch.Cedar Run Farm offers several events throughout the year that allow visitors to tour the farm and see the process of making syrup. The syrup itself can be purchased from the website or one of more than two dozen locations around the state.
