This Charming Little Farm Town In West Virginia Is The Perfect Place To Get Away From It All

Who needs a good idea for a beautiful, quiet, idyllic place to get away from it all? Everyone? Well, here's one option that fits the bill: the tiny farm town of Union in West Virginia. While there are oodles of small towns in West Virginia, this quiet, rural haven has all the makings of a simple, rustic retreat away from the crowds.

More than two centuries ago. That's when the town of Union, West Virginia was formed: all the way back in the year 1800.

It's a farm town, perched in the rolling fields of Monroe County in eastern West Virginia.

By 1835, the turn-of-the-century town of Union was thriving: 400 citizens, two hotels, two tanneries, a school, two churches, and two doctors. Some of the bustling industry in Union was thanks to several natural salt springs nearby.

A stroll through the streets of Union today provides glimpses into that past: the current Romanesque-style courthouse is from 1881. Several of the local churches are from the mid-1800s, and the nearby Rehoboth Church, the oldest Protestant church west of the Allegheny Mountains, is from 1784.

The Union Historic District is just one of the things that makes this charming town an ideal choice for a scenic getaway or for some good rest and relaxation.

In fact, for such a small town, you'll find a TON of history!

Pictured is the Rehoboth Church and Museum grounds.

Not a history buff? Don't think for one moment that's all there is to do here! The natural beauty is unreal.

There are plenty of spots where you can admire foliage, do some bird watching, and take in the fresh air.

There are plenty of trails to explore around these parts.

As you drive the roads around Union, you'll pass farm after farm (and, as one of the scenic perks of farming country, barn after barn!). Many of these farms are on the Heritage Quilt Trail, and you'll note the colorful wooden quilt squares hanging on many of the barns.

If you come in early June, you can even attend festivities for Farmer's Day.

Here in the countryside, it stays calm and quiet. No traffic. No stoplights, even. The views are long and peaceful. The people are friendly and down to earth.

And the wildlife is plentiful!

To make your visit even better, just stay awhile! Pop into a quaint bed and breakfast, like the Willow Bend B&B, and you might never want to leave.

Doesn't that sound like an idyllic, nostalgic escape from all the hustle and bustle of modern life? Union, WV may get overlooked by the masses, but that only adds to its charm as one of the cutest rural towns in West Virginia.

Up for a hike while you're in the area? As pictured above, Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory isn't far! (Just be sure to bundle up while you're there in case the wind picks up.) Hungry? In addition to several restaurants in Union itself, check out the dining establishments in nearby Gap Mills.
