Dogs in Washington Are Basically Family. Here Are the Best Places to Travel With Them.
Many Washingtonians consider their dogs their children. Here's how to travel with your pups, including where to stay, what to do, and how to have an unforgettable time!
Growing up with as many as four large dogs in my childhood home, I never considered myself a "small dog person." When my partner and I began looking for a puppy, I wanted a sturdy hiking companion, a dog I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally sitting on, and one that didn't require round-the-clock protection from birds of prey.
And yet, somehow, we ended up with Tina Louise, our Yorkie-poodle who -- at her most pampered -- tips the scales at just under six pounds. From the moment she joined us, Tina made it her mission to prove all my "little dog assumptions" wrong. My husband and I were immediately smitten. Fast forward seven years, and we now share our home with not one, not two, not three, but four small dogs.
Though we have what we call a "dog-forward" home, my partner and I are far from the only people who see their furry flock as family. In Washington, almost 50 percent of households have at least one dog; in Seattle, that number is even higher. In 2021, the government reported 153,000 pooches registered within city limits, outnumbering children by a whopping 45,822! Our state also has some of the nation's best-cared-for canines, ranking among the top three for per-dog spending and veterinary care.
For all this puppy love, including dogs in the family fold isn't without its challenges. Like children, arranging care for your pets while you travel can be difficult, especially when you reach the human to dog ratio of my household. That's why my partner and I have started traveling with our pooches (yes, all of them), and we're not alone. Sixty percent of Washingtonians have brought their pups along on vacation -- the highest number nationwide.
Tips and Tricks for Dog-Friendly Travel
With practice, my husband and I have developed a system for dog-friendly travel. In this journey, we've found certain items essential. For instance, if you've got pint-sized or senior companions, a good stroller is far more practical than it might appear. Collapsable water bottles are helpful on hikes or long drives. I also highly recommend crate-training your dogs. In my experience, the most challenging part of travel is settling your pooches into their new space. Familiar crates, bedding, and boredom-busting toys set nerves at ease.
That being said, research is another key part of planning a vacation with your pets. Luckily, I've compiled a list of dog-friendly rentals, activities, and need-to-know information to make your next getaway a breeze!
