This Incredible Road Trip Through Washington Passes Countless Stunning Lakes
Are you planning a warm-weather adventure? Explore this unforgettable summer road trip near Mount Rainier that's all about alpine lakes!
Even with the best checklists to streamline road trip planning, deciding where to go can stump the savviest traveler. But what goes better with sunshine than glittering alpine lakes? This summer road trip near Mount Rainier passes some of the park's prettiest lakes and combines camping with nights at iconic Washington accommodations.
Stop 1: The Hobo Inn, Elbe
Begin your adventure in the caboose of Elbe's Hobo Inn, a beloved and quirky train-turned-hotel often featured in popular Washington travel write-ups. Boasting a restaurant and endless photo ops, Hobo Inn has served as the launch pad for unforgettable road trips since guests first came aboard in 1987.
Stop 2: Lake Christine
It's easy to get squirrely on a long drive, so I prefer breaking up long stints in the car with opportunities to stretch my legs. On your way to the next overnight spot, pull off at the trailhead for Lake Christine. At under four miles, this gorgeous hike is a fantastic route curling through Mount Rainier's old-growth forests.
Stop 3: Paradise Inn, Mount Rainier National Park
Spend your next night at Paradise Inn, easily one of our national park system's most iconic accommodations. Located at 5,400 feet above sea level, this incredible hotel has hosted guests since 1917, offering regular people views of Rainier that — until that point — had been exclusively enjoyed by rangers and mountaineers. Extend your stay and hike the Skyline Trail or keep your visit short and oh-so-sweet.
Stop 4: Reflection Lake
On the morning of your departure, pack a lunch and head to Reflection Lake, just ten minutes from Paradise Inn. It's easy to see why this six-and-a-half-mile loop is famously beautiful. Take your time on this trail and enjoy the views. Washington is breathtaking.
Stop 5: Ohanapecosh Campground and Tipsoo Lake
Unwind for the evening at my favorite campground in all of Washington — Ohanapecosh outside Randle. This is a larger campground with approximately 188 campsites and it is tucked away among the trees. It's a place where you can feel like you are truly escaping the worries of the world. Opt to stay longer at Ohanapecosh or drive thirty minutes to Tipsoo Lake Trailhead the following day, another dazzling alpine stunner.
Stop 6: Black Diamond
After a road trip with as much time spent on trails as in the car, reward yourself with a final night in Black Diamond at this cozy, lakeside rental. Stay for a few days in this two-bedroom, two-bathroom lake house where you can relax and enjoy water views. It's the perfect ending to this dreamy summer road trip in Washington.
This summer road trip near Mount Rainier is a hiker's dream, passing numerous jaw-dropping alpine lakes. All you need are your hiking shoes, favorite car snacks, and a sense of adventure for the trip of a lifetime!
