Labor Day weekend might mark the unofficial end of summer, but for many Washingtonians, it also offers an extra day to enjoy a getaway. Three day weekends are perfect for heading to those destinations that may require a little extra time to explore. These are our top seven picks.
1. Long Beach
The Long Beach Peninsula is gorgeous, but it's quite a trek for most Washingtonians. A long weekend offers the perfect opportunity to make the drive and still have a couple of days to relax at the beach.
2. The Olympic Peninsula
From the hiking trails to the rainforest and the awe-inspiring beaches, the Olympic Peninsula offers miles and miles of nature to explore. And while a long weekend isn't enough time to see it all, it's a great start.
3. Walla Walla
If you love wine, you'll definitely never be bored in Walla Walla. But even if you don't, you'll love spending a few days in this charming little city, which is quickly becoming a top tourist destination in the Northwest.
4. Mt. Rainier National Park
Every Washingtonian should experience Mt. Rainier at least once. And since the park is so vast, there will always be new territory to explore no matter how many times you go.
5. Seattle
Whether you love the museums, classic tourist attractions like Pike Place Market or Seattle's sports teams, you'll never run out of things to do in the Emerald City. A long weekend is enough time to see all your favorite attractions and even take a ferry to Bainbridge Island for a change of pace.
6. Chelan
Not only is the lake beautiful in any season, but the town itself is fantastic. Chelan has great shopping, delicious food, year-round events and festivals, and wineries that look like they were plucked straight out of Europe.
7. The San Juan Islands
The commute to the San Juans is absolutely beautiful, but for most of us, it's lengthy. You'll want that extra day to enjoy Friday Harbor, check out the lighthouses and landmarks, and spend time in nature.
These weekend getaways are amazing, but traveling can be costly. Luckily, all of Washington's cities have plenty of free things to do.
