Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Virginia Before Fall Ends

Fall is my favorite time of year for travel in Virginia. The summer crowds have thinned out a bit, and there's so much to enjoy in the way of picturesque hiking trails, off-the-beaten-path natural wonders, and, of course, small towns that come alive this time of year. Fall in Virginia is not a season to waste; it comes and goes so quickly. To help you make the most of this colorful yet fleeting season, I'd like to recommend a handful of charming mountain towns to visit in Virginia before fall is over. All you need to do is fuel up your car and pack your favorite flannel shirt.

1. Hot Springs

This small resort town, famous for the Omni Homestead, is an idyllic destination in the fall. The Alleghany Highlands transform into vibrant shades of red, yellow, and gold, and quiet hiking trails lead you to unforgettable overlooks. Book a few nights at the Homestead or wander off the beaten path and opt for a few nights at Fort Lewis Lodge. Don't forget to book a mineral soak at the Warm Springs Pools!

2. Crozet

About 30 minutes from Charlottesville, Crozet is a peaceful mountain town that will transport you to a simpler time. Yet this vibrant community is brimming with charming local businesses, renowned wineries, and so many fun things to do. Grab a sandwich from Greenwood Grocery and then enjoy a picnic at Mint Valley Springs Park. Love Virginia wine? King Family Vineyards is a must!

3. Staunton

We recently highlighted Staunton as a small town in Virginia that feels like the fictional Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. I love Staunton's historic downtown, with its dramatic hills and stately architecture. But it's got a cozy feel to it, too, especially if you duck into a local coffee house or bookshop and stay awhile. For the perfect home base, check out the Blackburn Inn, a boutique hotel inside a beautifully renovated historic building.

4. Abingdon

Southwest Virginia is decidedly underrated, unless, of course, you happen to be lucky enough to live in this region of Virginia. Abingdon is a wonderful place to visit in the fall, not only for the stunning fall foliage you'll discover at every turn but also for the endless number of trails to enjoy. From Abingdon, you can easily access the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and even Mount Rogers Natural Recreation Area. In short, don't forget your hiking boots when you visit Abingdon.

5. Winchester

This northern Virginia town is the "Apple Capital" of our state, and fall is a perfect time to visit. Head to Marker Miller Orchards for pick-your-own apples, typically open through early November. You'll love strolling down Winchester's Old Town Walking Mall, or grabbing some top-quality pizza at Oak Stone Craft Pizza and Bar.
