Scenic train rides in Virginia are a wonderful way to enjoy the day or weekend. We live in a fast-paced world. It seems like these days, traveling folks are increasingly eager to arrive at their destinations. But zipping to the next stopping point often robs us of the entire travel experience. Fortunately, trains accommodate both the traveler and the sight-seer, taking us to a new destination while we sit back and enjoy the views.
While train rides in Virginia may have been replaced by faster modes of transportation, nothing can quite compare to the experience of taking scenic train rides in Virginia. It's a timeless experience. The following Virginia train rides will offer unique views of the countryside, mountains, valleys, and all corners of our beautiful state. Save yourself the hassle of driving in traffic and relax in an old-fashioned or modern train car. You'll be glad to enjoy the ride.
1. Buckingham Branch Scenic Railway
This open-air sightseeing excursion is not one to be missed. These Virginia train rides depart from Dillwyn Station and head straight for the unspoiled landscape of central Virginia. The Buckingham Branch Railroad trip is the perfect outing for a family vacation. You'll want to be sure to have some cash on hand to buy any souvenirs or snacks while on board. The 16-mile trip will take approximately 3.5 hours. This is truly a Virginia scenic railway and one of the best train rides in Virginia.
2. German Train at Busch Gardens
Busch Gardens in Williamsburg is a European-themed amusement park. One of its prized features is the German Train for some of the best train rides in Virginia. The railway was built in 1975, the same year as the amusement park. The course includes three stations and runs a 2.5-mile loop. What makes this ride so special is the fact that it spans across the "Rhine River" by means of a trestle. The Rhine River trestle is an extraordinary view, whether you are on the train or admiring it from the ground. It may not be the most exhilarating ride in the park, but it definitely offers some of the best views. Learn more about this fun train ride in Virginia, and then plan your next visit.
3. Manassas to Front Royal
Editor's Note: This train excursion is not currently available, but check out The Cardinal for another scenic route.
Is there anything more patriotic than a train excursion called The American? This steamlined train, known as the 611, is offering rides on June 4th and June 5th this summer. Originally, the 611 was one of fourteen locomotives under the Norfolk & Western Railway system in the 1940s. Today, passengers will admire gorgeous views of northern Virginia hillsides during this 102-mile round-trip journey. As you might have guessed, history will play a big part in the tour, and Civil War buffs can enjoy riding along the historic Southern Railway tracks. Be sure to get your tickets as soon as you can, as they could sell out soon.
It's sad to think about train rides as something of the past. Hopefully, with so many museums dedicated to the history of trains and locomotives, train travel won't disappear altogether. Have you taken any of these scenic train rides in Virginia? We'd love to hear about your experience!
