If you're looking for a scenic drive in Virginia, you won't have to search for too long. Famous routes like the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive mean that gorgeous vistas are always accessible to those up for an adventure. That being said, there are some lesser-known drives to consider as well. In addition to Virginia's rural byways and backroads, there are plenty near Virginia's most populous cities. The notion of a scenic drive near the nation's capital -- it's a bit counter-intuitive, isn't it? But that's exactly what you'll find in the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia, and that's exactly why it was created.

Welcome to the George Washington Memorial Parkway! This route was established in the 1930s as a route that would provide scenic driving to those in the northern Virginia and Washington D.C. area.

In a region famous for its bumper-to-bumper traffic and commuting, this parkway feels like a breath of fresh air. Of course, it would be misleading to say it's without traffic, but there's considerably less of it, and those traveling are by and large here for the views, scenery, and history.

The drive measures 25 miles and stretches between McLean, Virginia, and Mount Vernon.

Along the way, the road links sites important to America's history, including the Clara Barton National Historic Site, Fort Marcy, Theodore Roosevelt Island, Lady Bird Johnson Park, Jones Point Lighthouse, Fort Hunt Park, and Mount Vernon.

Perhaps the most famous site is Great Falls Park, a bucket-list-worthy national park situated on the mighty Potomac River.

If you don't have time to get out and explore the parks and trail systems, you'll certainly appreciate the scenic pull-offs, some of which offer the most magnificent views of Washington D.C.

It really is a lovely blend of history, architecture, cultural significance, and natural beauty.
