Take An Unforgettable Drive To The Top Of One Of Virginia’s Highest Mountains

Virginia has its fair share of tall peaks. From Hawksbill Summit in Shenandoah National Park to Mount Rogers near Grayson Highlands State Park, there's no shortage of high-altitude views to enjoy here in the Old Dominion. Today's feature destination is one such mountain peak that you can actually drive to! However, visitors should note that this scenic drive in Virginia is definitely an adventure. (Read: we're going on a very windy gravel road!)

Measuring 5,520 feet, Whitetop Mountain is the second-tallest peak in Virginia. And unlike the state's other mountains, it's actually possible to drive to the top of it!

The road to reach Whitetop Mountain winds through beautiful hardwood forests, open meadows, and gorgeous landscapes characteristic of southwestern Virginia.

As you can see, the route isn't paved and is very windy. Four-wheel drive is definitely recommended!

Approaching the summit, take note of the beautiful evergreens that surround you.

While it's possible to drive all the way to the summit, you can also park in the parking lot on the way up and hike the last portion to the top. It's here you're likely to see some incredible wildlife.

In the summer months, this is a popular spot for bird watchers.

One thing to note: there's no panoramic view from the top of the mountain. However, along the way, you'll see plenty of remarkable scenery.

Whitetop Mountain is also located along the Appalachian Trail, which offers tons of beautiful hiking and camping opportunities.
