Backbone Rock Tunnel is a fascinating manmade wonder near Damascus, Virginia that everyone should explore at least once.

Constructed in 1901, this tunnel was created so that railroad access could be created between Shady Valley, TN, and Damascus, VA. Today, drivers can pass through what's been deemed affectionately as the World's Shortest Tunnel.

But the adventure doesn't stop there; it's actually possible to hike to the top of this fascinating landmark.

From the modest parking area, visitors will discover a trail that takes you up a flight of stairs to an unforgettable vantage point.

There are a few things to note about this adventure. A relatively steep climb is required, and the drop-offs are intense once at the top of the bridge.

There are handrails for support; however, this trail is not recommended for younger explorers or anyone who may experience difficulty with heights.
