Experience Vermont’s Best Waterfalls and Swimming Holes on This Perfect Summer Road Trip
We're starting our road trip with a challenging yet supremely rewarding hike to Lye Brook Falls, a 125-foot waterfall that's among the tallest of its kind in the state. The trail is 4.5 miles and rated moderately challenging, although most hikers agree it's pretty tough, so get ready for a steep climb. The trail is wide and well-maintained, although some small streams can form after a heavy rain. Hikers agree that the ascent keeps things interesting, and the woods here feel downright magical. It's a perfect way to start your road trip! If you need a place to fuel up after your hike, head to The Hatchery, about 40 minutes from the trail and just a quick drive from your next destination. They're all about scratch-made breakfasts—we're talking fresh-squeezed orange juice and cinnamon roll French toast.
Ready for a swim? Located within Okemo State Forest, Buttermilk Falls is a lovely series of waterfalls and natural swimming pools, some of which are up to 25 feet wide. These refreshing water features are accessible via a 0.5-mile trail. Upper Buttermilk Falls is actually comprised of two main drops, which then cascade into a clear pool below. The Lower Falls are equally as enchanting, offering an even wider pool of water to wade into.
Where to Stay
After a day full of adventures, check in to a stunning, mountain-view Airbnb just 3.5 miles from Woodstock Village. The Loft can accommodate five guests, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's a beautiful apartment space located atop a bright red barn and boasts magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Guests rave about the cathedral ceilings, fireplace, and stunning scenery.
Measuring about 15 feet, Bartlett Falls—also known as Bristol Falls or New Haven River Gorge—can be reached just a quick 0.2 miles from the gravel parking area. After a quick walk through the woods, you'll hear the falls before you see them. This is a popular swimming hole during the summer months and can attract hundreds of visitors in a single day. Due to the block-style falls, the waterfall forms a ledge that you can swim behind, assuming the river isn't flowing too strongly. If currents are faster than normal, it's best to avoid swimming here.
Characterized by deep swimming holes, dramatic cliffs, and fast-moving water, Warren Falls is a must-see. It's located along Route 100 in Warren, Vermont, and is loved for its crystal-clear waters. If you're not up for a swim, you can lounge on the banks, soaking up the sun and admiring the surrounding woods. There's a designated parking area on the west side of the highway; it's important not to park along the road. It's just a brief walk from the parking area to the waterfall. After your swimming hole adventure, we recommend checking out Ranch Camp, a casual restaurant and tap room (plus a full-service bike shop) in Stowe. It's the perfect spot to enjoy an amazing burger before your last waterfall hike.
A short-and-sweet hike (about 0.5 miles round-trip) leads you to Bingham Falls, the final destination on this waterfall adventure. The last few minutes of the hike are especially steep and can be slippery, so a sturdy pair of hiking boots is a must. There are also a few portions of the trail that hug the gorge's edge closely, and many of them are marked off. Be sure to stay firmly on the trail and pay close attention to any roped-off sections. You'll soon reach the base of this 40-foot waterfall and marvel at its grandeur while also enjoying a refreshing mist.
