It’s Official: Utah’s Very Own Vernal Is One Of The Country’s Coolest Small Towns To Visit This Year

When you think about the town of Vernal, Utah, does the word "cool" immediately come to mind? The folks over at Matador Network certainly do, having compiled a list of The 25 Coolest Towns In America. Vernal was lucky enough to make the list -- and we're inclined to agree. You might or might not have checked out this unique community during past travels through our wonderful state, but we definitely agree that this place should be included in your upcoming travel plans. Get ready to fall utterly in love with Vernal, Utah.

If you've ever visited the truly one-of-a-kind town of Vernal, you've been greeted by Dinah: a big, pink dinosaur that sits at the edge of town.

Dinosaurs are definitely a draw in this cool town, but they're just the tip of the iceberg.

Vernal is home to around 10,000 people, and it's a thriving community with plenty of jobs in the natural gas and petroleum industries.

The healthy economy here means that there are plenty of great businesses for visitors to patronize, and downtown Vernal offers all kinds of restaurants and eateries to select from.

When hunger strikes, it's easy to find a great place to dine. Pay a visit to Antica Forma for some delicious, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza...

...or grab a refreshing beer at Vernal Brewing, which offers tasty food and award-winning craft brews.

Vernal is surrounded by outdoor recreation opportunities, so you'll find plenty of hikers, mountain bikers, climbers, and river rafters around.

Vernal is much less crowded than other hip, outdoorsy spots like Moab and Kanab, but you'll still enjoy incredible scenic beauty. Take an amazing three, four, or five-day river rafting tour through the Gates of Lodor on the Green River to discover a part of Vernal you might not have known about. OARS offers guided tours leaving from downtown. It doesn't get much more convenient than this!

On a hot day, gear up and hike the Jones Hole Trail.

This trail takes you to a pretty waterfall and swimming hole. The hike is 7.7 miles out and back and its terrain is rated as easy. It's pretty remote, so make sure you have plenty of gas, a spare tire, water, snacks, and a means of communication during your adventure.

Visit Fantasy Canyon to see some of the most surreal rock formations you'll ever lay eyes on.

For a dose of natural history, take a hike along a trail where dinosaurs once roamed -- and see the evidence they left behind.

Visit Red Fleet State Park and take the Dinosaur Trackway trail to see dino tracks with your own two eyes. These tracks were left by Dilophosaurus, an eight-foot-tall dinosaur with strong hind legs. It's tough not to be enchanted by this spot.

Speaking of dinosaurs, if paleontology is your thing, Vernal is definitely the place to be.

You'll want to visit Dinosaur National Monument, where you can see the Wall of Bones, which has more than 1,500 fossils. You can even touch some of the dinosaur bones! Check out the Quarry Exhibit Hall, then visit the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park to learn more about these magnificent creatures from the past.
