Parowan was the first official settlement in southern Utah. This small town was established in January of 1851, which is where it receives the name, “Mother Town of Southern Utah.”
However, the history of this area goes back much further in time. Native American Tribes settled in the area centuries prior, even though little is known about them.
Today, as you explore Parowan, you’ll still see evidence of this town’s past. There are many historic buildings with pioneer influence all throughout the area.
One of the most well-known historic buildings is the Old Rock Church. This building served as a church meetinghouse, schoolhouse, and community recreation center for approximately 50 years. Today, you can still visit the Old Rock Church as it is home to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum.
History buffs will also enjoy taking the short drive outside of town to Parowan Gap, a unique gap in the rocks that is covered with incredible petroglyphs.
It is believed the petroglyphs at Parowan Gap are more than 1,000 years old. You can easily check them out by walking an easy, paved trail that is 0.2 miles out and back.
