How to Travel Smart When It’s 100 Degrees Out (and Still Have a Great Trip)
From hydration hacks to points-savvy strategies, here’s how to beat the heat and travel smart during summer’s hottest days.
When summer temperatures hit triple digits in many parts of the U.S., travelers need more than just sunscreen—they need smart strategies to stay cool. Whether you're taking road trips, booking flights, or riding a train to hot, humid destinations, you'll need some essentials packed to keep you cool, plus expert-approved tips for preventing heatstroke or illness. Let's dive into some of those tips for healthy summer travel in the U.S. now, whether you're from the U.S. or traveling internationally.

Savvy Day Planning
Believe it or not, planning can make all the difference. Sure, do I love a good fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants vacation? Of course. Because I love unexpected detours. But during a heatwave, planning can really go a long way. Start early, then retreat indoors during peak heat. Museums, shopping centers, or cafe breaks offer cool escapes. For transit, choose rideshare or shaded shuttle stops. Always check your accommodation’s air-conditioning—if unsure, confirm before you book.
Plan Around Peak Hours
Avoid walking tours or outdoor activities between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., the hottest part of the day. Instead, opt for cooler early mornings or shaded evening explorations. Personally, I love a good night tour, especially when it revolves around haunted happenings and local lore. When you save touring for the evening, you free up your days for cooler activities indoors.

Monitor the Warning Signs
According to Global Rescue’s Jeff Weinstein, heat-related illness can strike anytime: “Heat exhaustion often starts with heavy sweating, nausea, dizziness … If not addressed, it can escalate into heat stroke.” Always carry extra water, and take breaks in air-conditioned spots if symptoms appear. Also, don't push yourself when the temperatures are rising. If you're anything like me and can have a jam-packed travel itinerary to see it all, sometimes less is best so you don't overdo it.
Smart Packing Essentials
Pack light and versatile: fast-drying shirts and breathable hats. Bring a reusable, insulated water bottle and portable electrolyte packets. Include a cooling towel and compact fan—perfect for an afternoon slump in the sun. For me, electrolyte packets are a must, no matter where I go. I try to drink as much water as possible when traveling, but sometimes it's easy to sub that glass of H20 with a much-needed margarita. Electrolyte packets help replenish essential nutrients and minerals I've lost while out exploring, in order to feel restored.

Stay Flexible with Plans
CNBC's Brian Kelly suggests harnessing travel rewards as a safety net: “Use flexible points … when your flight’s canceled on one airline, you can book using points on another.” If your itinerary gets derailed by heat-related delays, rewards can provide peace of mind and a backup. Removing the hassle of cancellations, fees, and refunds can really create a stress-free mentality.
Traveling in a heat wave takes planning, but with a few smart adjustments, the summer journey can still be memorable. Hydrate wisely, dress strategically, and stay alert to your body's signals. Combine that with flexible scheduling and savvy packing, and you’ll reclaim comfort—even when the mercury rises.
