The Small Town in Texas That Comes Alive in the Fall Season
With its small-town charm, Southern hospitality, and scenery, Winnsboro is a glorious place to visit in the fall.
Without a doubt, one of the best small towns for fall in Texas is Winnsboro. This itty-bitty city may only have about 3,650 residents, but you'd never know it if you visit during the fall months, whether it's for the annual Winnsboro Autumn Trails celebration or to enjoy the fall colors and weather later in the season. The month-long autumn festival event features pie and chili cook-offs, a flea market, an antique car show, and so much more. Even better than the festivities, however, is the town's overflowing small-town charm and Southern hospitality, which make tourists feel like lifelong Winnsboro natives and can be enjoyed at any time this season.
About Winnsboro
No matter where you're from, visiting Winnsboro — a small town of around 3,650 located about an hour north of Tyler — feels a bit like coming home. It's one of those small towns most of us think only exist in movies, with year-round events and a tight-knit community filled with families. Head down to Winnsboro's Main Street for a taste of what this town has to offer, including restaurants, antique stores, boutiques, art galleries, and historic buildings. It's a wonderful place to visit in East Texas year-round but there's just something so magical about being here in the fall!
Winnsboro's Fall Festival
My personal favorite time of year to take a trip to Winnsboro is in the fall, primarily because of the annual Winnsboro Autumn Trails celebration. With festivities happening every weekend in October, Winnsboro Autumn Trails is something straight out of a Hallmark movie. There's a pageant, rodeos, a swap meet, and the all-important trail ride through the streets of downtown, which is arguably the most iconic event of the festival. Guests can also participate in (or just enjoy the fruits of) various contests, such as a chili cook-off and a pie and cake baking contest. Whether you're a contestant or you just want to sample the entries, everyone wins.
The classic car show and parade are also beloved by Winnsboro locals and visitors alike. You'll see many makes and models of cars that were discontinued decades ago, and it's a welcome blast from the past.
If you're interested in sprucing up your home with some new fall decor, there is also a flea market with vendors selling all sorts of handmade items. Other events include a 5K and fun run, a hot pepper eating contest, a beard and mustache contest, a dominoes tournament, and more. And don't forget to stock up on Winnsboro Autumn Trails merch before you leave. This is definitely one festival you'll never want to forget. However, if you missed the festival this year, you can attend next year. Stay up to date by visiting the Winnsboro Autumn Trails website or the Winnsboro Autumn Trails Facebook page for more information about the festival.
Fall Colors in Winnsboro
Later in the fall is when Winnsboro looks absolutely glorious! The town typically experiences peak fall foliage from late October through November, but the timing can vary slightly each year. One of the best places to see fall color in East Texas is Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, where you can hike through the forest or even camp among the foliage in the fall. You'll also be able to see fall foliage around town, especially when visiting Winnsboro City Park or Lake Winnsboro.
