It’s rare to find a town that looks like a Hallmark movie all year — not just during the holiday season. If you’re looking for one of the most charming small towns in Texas with quaint shops, restaurants, and friendly locals, Boerne is the place to go. This Hill Country gem belongs on a postcard, with historic buildings, year-round seasonal activities, a strong community spirit, and a slower pace of life that allows for time to appreciate the little things. 

Welcome to Boerne, Texas. A suburb of San Antonio, this charming town has a rich German heritage, beautiful scenery, and a relaxed way of life, making it an ideal getaway for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. Boerne has been ranked among the happiest places in America, and it regularly makes headlines for having one of the country’s most picturesque main streets. However, it’s a “larger” small town, the population of roughly 22,000 pales in comparison to San Antonio’s 1.5 million. You’ll feel yourself exhale as busy highways turn into quiet streets filled with pedestrians enjoying a leisurely stroll through the town square.

Boerne’s German influence is still alive and well, from the architecture of its historic buildings to the name of its Main Street: Hauptstrasse (which simply means “Main Street” in German). You'll be transported back in time when you see the old courthouse, marvel at a German Bible from the 1600s housed inside the Patrick Heath Public Library, and tour the city's first jail, which is now a museum. The towns in Hallmark movies always have stories to tell, and Boerne surely fits the bill.

Boerne looks like a Hallmark movie mainly because of the Hill Country Mile. This stretch of Main Street boasts over 80 shops and restaurants, many of which are housed in century-old historic buildings. Shop the latest clothing trends at a boutique, browse handmade jewelry, gifts, and home decor, and admire works from talented local artists at a gallery. Finish the day at one of the city's award-winning restaurants or craft breweries, served with a generous helping of Southern hospitality.

Of course, no Hallmark movie town is complete without a bed and breakfast, and The Kendall is a must-stay. The inn is housed in a 1850s Southern Colonial building that served as a stagecoach stop during Boerne's early days. It features beautiful, well-appointed guest rooms and an on-site restaurant offering upscale American cuisine with a Southern flair.

And then, there's the nature. The Hill Country Mile is just steps away from paved trails that meander along the banks of Cibolo Creek. One of my favorite things about Hallmark movies is how everyone always seems to be outside strolling around town, and that's definitely what you'll see in Boerne.
