The Day Trip Of A Lifetime You Can Only Take In Texas
Explore fascinating and underrated day trip destinations in East Texas, including kayaking on Caddo Lake and visiting historic towns like Jefferson and Lufkin.
If you live in East Texas and you've wondered, "what are some incredible day trips near me in Texas?" then you're in luck! Today's destination is one of the most fascinating in the Lone Star State, and it's also one of the most underrated. The Pineywoods definitely don't get enough attention compared to the Hill Country when it comes to day trips. Most people think the civilized areas are few and far between with only wide-open pastures separating them, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. East Texas is an exciting place that offers ample attractions, and it's about time we give it the recognition it deserves.
Our trip starts off in Uncertain, where we'll spend an hour or two kayaking on the beautiful Caddo Lake.
It's the only natural lake in Texas, and paddling underneath the canopy created by towering cypress trees draped with Spanish moss will bring you an unimaginable sense of tranquility. You can even fish without a license because it's a state park!
Then, we'll head just a few miles west to Jefferson, one of the most quaint, charming, and historic small towns in the state.
Its downtown includes the famous Jefferson General Store that's been in operation since the 1870s. You'll be whisked back in time immediately upon stepping inside between the jukebox, old-fashioned knick knacks, soda fountain, and candy counter.
Next up is Pittsburg, where an enormous bust pays tribute to Bo Pilgrim, the founder of a poultry company that eventually distributed its product around the world.
Although he had nothing to do with the pilgrims, he sported the traditional hat as a marketing technique - and it worked.
Now we're headed to the town of the Rangerettes to pay a visit to the East Texas Oil Museum.
You'll see exhibits with real artifacts from the 1930s oil boom in Texas. There's even a life-sized, full-scale town depicting life in a flourishing town during that time period. Afterward, feel free to tour the rest of the Kilgore College campus before we set off for our next destination.
Our second to last stop is Alto, the former ceremonial center for the ancient Native American Mound Builder culture.
Three mounds have been preserved for all these years, and you can learn more about the fascinating lives of the people who built them.
Last but not least is Lufkin, an East Texas town that's extremely underrated.
There's an old-fashioned movie theatre...
...a zoo with hundreds of species of animals...
...and even a drive-in theatre!
We hope we've helped provide some inspiration the next time you're wondering, "what are some day trips near me in Texas?" What's your favorite thing to do in East Texas? After you take this trip, here are 5 awesome day trips in Texas that you can take by train!
