The drive from Fort Worth to Glen Rose down Highway 67 is a scenic road to take any time of the year, but it is especially worthy for an autumn day trip when the oaks, elms, and sumac light up the area with a spectrum of colors. Not only is the 50-minute drive memorable with its views of the Paluxy River, rich pasturelands, and unspoiled terrain, there are also quaint shops, and mom-and-pop style diners, as well as some great barbecue along the way! Here's why you should take a little road trip to this charming town this fall:
Head southwest to Glen Rose, a charming town with a population of about 2,500.
While out-of-towners may know the town for its unique dinosaur park, the multitude of outdoor activities make it a perfect place to take a day trip.
Start your visit with a quick stop at the beautiful county courthouse of Somervell County, which was constructed using native limestone.
The courthouse was built in 1893 - it looks pretty good for it's age!
If you are interested in genealogy, stop in the Heritage Center.
The streets around the town square have several antique shops and quaint stores filled with local craftsmanship and creativity.
Of course, you must check out the amazing displays at Dinosaur World.
There are 20 acres of walkways that feature life-size dinosaurs and fossil digs. The walks are especially impressive October - December with fall foliage displays.
Dinosaur Valley State Park is a top attraction there for young and old alike.
The park encompasses over 1,500 acres and offers an incredible glimpse into ancient eras.
Stop to explore Big Rocks Park, which is located on the picture-perfect Paluxy River.
The tree-lined landscape along the Paluxy and Brazos Rivers make for a beautiful fall drive.
Feel free to pull over and venture along the creek beds.
Note: we're not responsible if you get wet!
Venture over to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a one-of-a-kind drive-through animal sanctuary.
Animals love the cooler weather and are more apt to make an appearance than in times of oppressive heat.
They may even pose for you...for some food, of course!
The expansive park provides ample views of the colorful fall foliage.
Stop and nosh at one of many locally-owned eateries, such as the Riverhouse Grill.
You'll find this cool house-turned-restaurant at 210 SW Barnard Street.
Their Voodoo Cajun Pasta with large, succulent shrimp is most definitely a favorite!
The Storiebook Café is a great place for coffee, dessert, or just some well-deserved downtime.
It's located at 502 NE Barnard Street, right on the Square.
Finish your day trip with some scrumptious mason jar peach cobbler topped with ice cream!
You can enjoy a perfect parting sunset as you drive back home after a fun-filled day.
