Why Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the Gateway of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Is Worth a Visit in Its Own Right
If you love unique museums, amusement parks, and beautiful views, and don't mind tourist attractions, Pigeon Forge is worth a visit.
Several years ago, I visited Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, with some friends. During our visit, we didn't even go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park—the main reason why most visit the town. Instead, we spent most of our time in Dollywood. Of course, renting a cabin near the theme park was a must, and we found a fabulous one with Smoky Mountain views. This getaway to Pigeon Forge with friends remains one of my most memorable U.S. trips to this day, and I want to share with you why it's worth a visit in its own right.
Why Visit Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge may be the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most-visited U.S. national park, but it has also become quite a touristy destination all on its own—and for good reason. While visiting the Smoky Mountains is a must for any adventurer, this small town of fewer than 6,400 residents is huge in terms of family-friendly fun. There is so much to do here! My friends and I felt like kids again as we went to some of the town's most entertaining attractions and dined at popular local spots. Sometimes we would even remember to look out at the majestic Smoky Mountains surrounding the town.
Things to Do and See in Pigeon Forge
Oh goodness...where do I begin? As I already stated, there's a lot to do here in Pigeon Forge, so let's start with my favorite place: Dollywood! I don't know about Disney World being the "happiest place on Earth" because I felt happiest at Dollywood (although both parks are great!). This 160-acre Appalachian-themed amusement park is home to thrilling rides, a water park, a replica of Dolly Parton's Tennessee mountain home, dinner shows, and more.
It's certainly worth coming to Pigeon Forge just for Dollywood, but wait, there's more! Scattered around town are an abundance of attractions like the Titanic Museum, which has a replica of the fated ship, the Alcatraz East Crime Museum, the upside-down WonderWorks educational museum (pictured above), the Rocky Top Mountain Coaster, and the Hollywood Wax Museum, among others.
Dining in Pigeon Forge
The Old Mill Restaurant is among the most popular places to dine in Pigeon Forge. Occupying an old mill that was built in 1830, it still has a slight historic feel as you dine on Southern-style comfort foods like country-fried steak or chicken, hushpuppies, or fried catfish. We had fun dining at this busy restaurant and immersed ourselves in its lively atmosphere!
Other highly-rated spots include the Local Goat New American Restaurant, which serves craft beer and food made with locally-sourced ingredients, Five Oaks Farm Kitchen for classic BBQ, and the 1950s-themed Sunliner Diner. No matter where you dine, it just might be as fun as one of the local attractions!
Accommodations in Pigeon Forge
If you plan on visiting Dollywood during your Pigeon Forge getaway, you may want to stay at Dollywood's DreamMore Resort. Whether you book one of its spacious rooms or suites, you'll enjoy amenities like a full-service spa, on-site dining, a trolley to Dollywood, and more.
If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, try the Hampton Inn Pigeon Forge, which offers complimentary breakfast, indoor and outdoor pools, and a fitness center. For someplace unique, the Firefly Bungalow is a treehouse guesthouse with a fire pit, an outdoor patio, and farm animals you can meet!
