Greeneville is a town of about 15,000 people in the hills of Northeastern Tennessee. The town was originally founded in 1783 and was even the capital of the State of Franklin, a short-lived unrecognized state that operated as a republic in the late 18th century.
Main Street in Greeneville is the quintessential small-town Main Street. The strip is full of shops and historical buildings, including the office where President Andrew Johnson began his political career.
The downtown area is home to more than 20 restaurants as well as a variety of antique shops and other stores. You can also stay in the downtown area at the beautiful, historic General Morgan Inn, or just catch a show at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.
The town is full of historical mansions and log cabins, many of which are still standing as they were when they were built in the late 1700s. Some of the town's streets will truly make you feel like you've travelled back in time to the days of the Tennessee frontier.
Greeneville is also known for hosting the Greene County Fair, which it has done every summer since 1870. The Fair was voted the "Champion of Champions" fair in Tennessee in 2005, and it was also the inspiration for the song "Walk Me Down The Middle" by The Band Perry.
The town is located near a plethora of trails and outdoor experiences of all lengths and difficulties. The Appalachian Trail itself is just a short distance from the town, making for a great opportunity to hike one of America's most famous trails.
There is also a lot of Civil War history in the town. The Battle of Blue Springs was fought just a short distance from the downtown area, and many buildings and sites played at least minor roles over the course of the war.
Now that you've seen the most enchanting town, we have a couple reasons Why Everyone Should Visit The Smallest City In Tennessee.
