5 Things to Do in the Dark in South Carolina (They’re Not What You Think)

The fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down; here are five amazingly fun things to do in the dark in SC, from hunting glowing mushrooms to gazing at the stars.

I am a bit of a night owl, so I love finding a good adventure after the sun goes down. In the Palmetto State, there is a wide variety of activities that you can only do during the twilight hours. There is something intriguingly engaging about seeing sparkling and beautiful light when all around you is the black of night. So, if you are like me, and you are drawn to the shiny lights like a mosquito to a bug zapper, this list will surely inspire your next great nighttime adventure!

1. See Synchronous Fireflies at Congaree National Park

I was fortunate enough to be able to see synchronous fireflies in the Smokies, and it was one of the best highlights of the year! But these amazing illuminated creatures also light up the night skies in Congaree National Park every year. For only a short time, these fireflies will come out and join thousands of others in a synchronized light show to impress a mate. The process is unreal to watch as the dark forest ebbs and flows in a bath of green light. You may have chased fireflies as a kid, but this is wholly different, as they all light up at the same time. I am still blown away by the experience, and if you sign up for the synchronous fireflies lottery, you could see this incredible natural phenomenon yourself.

2. Hunt the Forest for Glowing Mushrooms

Finding mushrooms on a hike can offer fun splashes of color, and the closer you look, the more beautiful they get. However, there is a natural phenomenon that will make you feel like you have stepped into a fantasy world. Hidden all throughout South Carolina forests, you can find bioluminescent fungi shining in the dark. Known as fox-fire or jack-o-lantern mushrooms, these otherworldly species captivate the imagination. One invaluable tool I use when hiking is AllTrails, and it's particularly handy while traversing the forest at night.

3. Paddle in the Moonlight at Myrtle Beach

A nice, relaxing kayak trip can be such a great way to enjoy the calm of the water, but have you ever been in the dark? This is a completely different experience as you watch the sunset creating golden ripples over the water. Take a guided kayak tour through the dark and keep your eyes peeled for bioluminescent jellyfish and microplankton. Your vessel will have a lantern to illuminate the way, but the experience will mostly be done in the dark of the night.

4. Play a Game of Glow Golf in Greenville

Mini golf is always a great way to have a little friendly competition with your friends and family. I love a good course that offers wild set pieces and creative themes, but nothing compares to glow golf. Takeoff Mini Golf offers guests a fantastic aviation-themed putt-putt course, and it gets even better when the lights go down. Activate your ball to see it light up in an ethereal glow. This is a simple yet great way to spruce up your mini-golf experience. In my humble opinion, they simply aced this one.

5. Go Stargazing

When it comes to lying down and looking up at a blanket of stars, there is no better place than Edisto Island. This low-light pollution area offers some of the best night skies to watch the brilliant celestial show. No matter the time of year, you can camp at Edisto Island State Park. With the soft sand and natural beauty all around, it's easy to say yes to a night in this park. Bring an RV or a tent and enjoy a night under one of the best places to see a starry night sky in the state.
