5 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Columbia, South Carolina, My Favorite Included

Looking for a quick escape from Columbia, SC? These 5 easy day trips—ranging from hidden gardens to historic sites—are packed with charm, nature, and adventure.

Columbia, South Carolina, has plenty to offer visitors, not just as a capital city, but as a weekend getaway. However, if you're thinking been there-done that, and need to hit the road for something new, we have you covered. Lucky for us, Columbia is perfectly placed for quick getaways—whether it's a trip to see some waterfalls, enjoy quaint beaches, or a stroll through slices of history. These five day trips are all within a couple of hours and pack a big punch for a little travel time. And yes, my personal favorite is tucked in here, too.

1. Congaree National Park

If you haven’t been to Congaree yet, stop what you're doing and put it at the top of your list. Just a short drive from downtown Columbia (about 30 minutes total), Congaree National Park is a surreal stretch of old-growth forest where the trees seem to go on forever and the boardwalk trail winds peacefully through the swamp. It’s quiet, it’s calm, and it's home to some of the tallest trees in the eastern U.S.

2. Aiken, South Carolina

If you love charming streets, historic homes, and a good café scene, Aiken is your spot. About an hour and fifteen minutes from Columbia, Aiken is known for its equestrian culture and springtime festivals. Aiken feels like the South preserved in a beautiful little bubble. You can stroll through Hopelands Gardens, visit the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, or shop local boutiques along Laurens Street.

3. Lake Murray

I've added my favorite smack dab in the middle of this list. I visit this lake every year in July for some family festivities, and it never disappoints. When it gets hot (and let’s be real, it does), Lake Murray becomes the go-to for all things cool and refreshing. Pro tip: Dreher Island State Park is an easy place to set up for the day with picnic areas, short trails, and boat ramps.

4. Landsford Canal State Park

If you time it right in late spring, Landsford Canal State Park becomes one of the most magical spots in South Carolina. It’s home to the largest known population of rocky shoals spider lilies, and their bloom turns the Catawba River into a floating field of flowers. But even outside bloom season, it’s worth visiting for riverside trails, historic canal ruins, and a dose of quiet nature.

5. Sumter and Swan Lake Iris Gardens

Sumter is known for its standout jewel: Swan Lake Iris Gardens. It’s the only public park in the U.S. where you can see all eight species of swan, and the gardens bloom beautifully from spring to fall. Bring a picnic, walk the peaceful trails, and snap a few photos with the whimsical topiary. Afterward, explore Sumter’s revitalized downtown with its cute cafés and shops.

So if you're chasing flowers, history, swans, or small town charm, these five destinations add even more variety to your day-tripping adventures from Columbia.
