Plan Your Road Trip

Before you slide behind the wheel, take a peek at the Google Maps directions for this road trip. You can easily customize them to add additional stops or remove stops if you're in a time crunch. Whatever you do, have fun.

1. Westerly

Let's kick off our road trip in the darling small town of Westerly, which straddles the Rhode Island-Connecticut border. If you're visiting during the summer, pack your beach gear for a few hours (or the whole day, if you've got the time) at Watch Hill Beach. Ride the carousel while you're there, too. Home of Misquamicut State Beach and Town Beach, Westerly offers plenty to do for outdoor lovers. Or, if you prefer, explore the charming downtown that's brimming with shops and restaurants.

2. Foster

Journey back in time to the small town of Foster, where you'll find Swamp Meadow Covered Bridge, the only covered bridge in Rhode Island. It's a must-visit as is Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in the state. A short trail leads to a marker that celebrates the spot that measures 811 feet. If you prefer a few hours of sheer relaxation, stop by Nickle Creek Winery or grab a bite at one of the local restaurants.

3. Barrington

One of the most charming coastal towns in Rhode Island, Barrington promises plenty to do, especially if you enjoy spending time outdoors. The small town is home to Haines Memorial State Park, Doug Raynor Wildlife Refuge, and Osamequin Nature Trails and Bird Sanctuary. Work up a hearty appetite, too, so you can try one of the restaurants in town.

4. Bristol

Sat along Narragansett Bay, Bristol is perhaps best known for its epic Fourth of July celebration, the oldest in the United States. If you're a history buff, carve out time to visit Mount Hope Farm, Bristol Art Museum, or Linden Place Museum. A stop at Colt State Park, often heralded as the gem of the Rhode Island state park system, is also a must.

5. Jamestown

Nestled on Conanicut Island, the peaceful town of Jamestown boasts an abundance of natural beauty and outdoor attractions, including Fort Wetherill State Park, Beavertail State Park, and Watson Farm. Explore the quaint shops, too, and treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of the small town's waterfront restaurants.

6. Charlestown

Our final stop brings us to Charlestown, considered by some the friendliest small town in Rhode Island. Whether you want to soak up the sun in the summer or go for a stroll in the off-season, you'll find several beaches - East Beach, Charlestown Town Beach, and Quonochontaug Beach - and Burlingame State Park and Campground in Charlestown. Keep an eye on the stargazing schedule at Frosty Drew Observatory & Sky Theatre if you enjoy looking up at the nighttime sky.
