Though Rhode Island is one of the densest states in the nation, there are still wonderful rural areas left to explore. While some are found scattered across the coast and set on islands, others are found in the north and offer densely forested nature sites. Each of the state's rural communities offer charming attractions, and a classic small town feel that are perfect to find some peace and quiet. Here are 11 towns in the state perfect to escape to.

1. New Shoreham

As the only town on beautiful Block Island, New Shoreham holds many wonders. With a year-round population of just over 1,000 residents, a gorgeous coast, restaurants and more, it is no wonder this charming island town has become such a travel destination.

2. Foster

Found in Providence County, the small town of Foster holds a population of less than 5,000 and offers wonderful hiking trails, beautiful farms, and more.

3. Exeter

Found along the Connecticut border the town of Exeter offers some of the most well known nature attractions in state. Some include Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge, Beach Pond, and part of Arcadia Management Area.

4. West Greenwich

This large rural town spans 51 square miles in Kent County and offers many opportunities to enjoy nature.

5. Hopkinton

This historic town of Hopkinton dates back to the mid 1700s and holds a population of just over 8,000 people.

6. Little Compton

This charming small town includes an independently owned vineyard, farms, consignment shops, and lovely farms. As if that wasn't enough, the amazing views of the Sakonnet River is yet another great sight to take in on the edges of the town.

7. Portsmouth

Founded by Anne Hutchinson, Portmsouth is the second oldest municipality in Rhode Island and was founded in 1638. Prudence Island is also part of Portsmouth and might be the most secluded place found in the state.

8. Glocester

In between Foster and Burrillville, the town of Glocester includes several gorgeous sites and offers a genuine small town vibe.

9. Westerly

This beachfront community offers delicious restaurants and various outdoor attractions. Located in the South Shore of the state, Westerly is still able to maintain its small town Rhode Island charm.

10. Scituate

Known mostly for its annual arts festival Scituate is a wonderful rural town in Providence County.

11. Burrillville

Located on the northern tip of the state bordering Massachusetts, Burrillville is a wonderful town with attractions ranging from the town center, charming small restaurants, and great nature sites.
