These days is there any place in Rhode Island that is truly remote? We like to think so. Situated in the Narragansett Bay is an island that is only accessible by boat. The community is small with a population of 150 and lives the island life peacefully. When you want a break from the hustle and bustle, a trip to Prudence Island is just what you need.
Situated in the Narragansett Bay, Prudence Island is one of more than thirty and the third largest of the bay's islands. Its remote beauty is like a timeless dream.
The island is only accessible by boat. Residents and visitors can board at the dock in Bristol to make the 25-minute journey out to the island.
Experienced kayakers can also make the paddle across the bay to the island beach to enjoy the sights.
The island has a small variety store near the ferry dock where you can load up on drinks and snacks before you start to explore.
Take a one-mile hike to the Sandy Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse is the oldest in Rhode Island and one of the few remaining in the U.S. that has its original birdcage lantern.
Another historic spot to visit is the charming one-room schoolhouse that was constructed in 1896. This schoolhouse has been used almost continuously since and provides education for the elementary age island children.
Life on Prudence Island is a little slower paced without the distractions of street lights or traffic noises. It's a wonderful spot for quiet contemplation or just a little fishing.
The beaches are undeveloped but a delightful place for a peaceful stroll or a little beachcombing.
