Rhode Island is such a delightfully creepy state and, in our opinion, the perfect place to celebrate Halloween. There are almost too many haunted spots to count, and new or unknown hauntings pop up all the time, meaning that it's tough for an enthusiast to get bored here. One great way to revel in all the scariness that Rhode Island has to offer is by taking a road trip to some of her MOST haunted spots. Read on below for a great way to spend an October day.

This trip involves just a little bit over two hours of driving and is almost a perfect loop of creepy fun. There are five stops along this route, so make sure to give yourself enough time to get out and explore.

1. The Providence Athenaeum

This gorgeous building is one of the nations first lending libraries, and is thought to be haunted by the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe! Poe dated a woman in Providence with a great passion for the occult and it is said she brought his spirit back to the Athenaeum.

2. The grave of Mercy Brown

The New England Vampire panic of the 19th century turned out to be a reaction to the side effects of tuberculosis, but that doesn't mean it didn't cause some restless spirits. One of the most famous stories to come from the panic is that of Mercy Brown, whos body was dug up on suspicious of vampirism and treated quite cruelly. It's now thought that her spirit haunts the area along with a few other assumed vampires that aren't so happy about how their bodies were treated during the panic.

3. Belcourt of Newport

Thought to be one of the most haunted mansions in Rhode Island, Belcourt is perfect for an October visit. There are multiple items in the home such as chairs and a suit of armor that come with stories of paranormal activity (a woman was thrown straight from a chair so violently that the chair is now roped off to prevent people sitting on it!) As well there are tales of full on ghostly apparitions, voices that come from seemingly nowhere, and items moving of their own accord.

4. Colt State Park

Two different tragic accidents have led to the belief that Colt State Park in Bristol Rhode Island is incredibly haunted. Nicknamed the Gem of the State Park System, you wouldn't expect the darkness that lurks in the buildings and on the trails. However, a farmhand passed on the property and is said to haunt the park office, doing things like slamming doors and moving items. As well there are the spirits of two young girls who drowned at the park that supposedly follow hikers and laugh in an attempt to frighten them out of the park. Make sure to allow some extra time for this excursion because the park is quite large and there's lots to see!

5. Crescent Park Looff Carousel

Lastly we have a haunted carousel. The Crescent Park Looff carousel was once part of a larger amusement park and ballroom that tragically burned down in the 60's. It is said now that the spirits of people who died in the fire still linger at the carousel, making mischief by flicking lights, and turning on music. There have also been recorded sightings of a ghostly woman in Victorian dress.

We think this day trip is the absolute best way to take in as much of Rhode Islands spooky history as possible!
