There's something special about a road trip that invites you to slow down and take your time, exploring every turn and discovering hidden gems along the way. Coastal road trips are some of my favorites for that very reason, and that's exactly what this journey through the Ocean State is all about.

Whether you're marveling at the beauty of Napatree Point or soaking in the historic charm of Newport, this Rhode Island road trip has everything you need for an unforgettable day. So, let's hit the road and enjoy all that this beautiful state has to offer.

A wooden walkway leads to a sandy beach at Napatree Point Conservation Area in Westerly, Rhode Island.
1. Napatree Point Conservation Area
Beaches, Lakes & RiversWesterly, RI

Our journey begins at the peaceful Napatree Point Conservation Area in Westerly, a true haven for nature lovers. Step out of your car and immerse yourself in 86 acres of unspoiled coastal habitat. As you wander, you'll discover a 1.3-mile sandy spit stretching into Little Narragansett Bay, a paradise for birdwatchers. Keep your eyes peeled for endangered Piping Plovers scurrying along the shore or Ospreys soaring overhead. If you're lucky, you might even spot an American Oystercatcher with its distinctive orange bill.

To make the most of your visit, aim to arrive early in the morning when wildlife is most active. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars and comfortable walking shoes—you’ll want to take in every inch of this coastal treasure.

Next, head to the serene Charlestown Breachway for a quick yet memorable stop. This state beach offers a perfect chance to stretch your legs and take in the fresh sea air. Feeling adventurous? Dip your toes in the cool Atlantic waters or enjoy watching locals cast their lines at this popular saltwater fishing spot. The breachway, connecting Ninigret Pond to Block Island Sound, also provides a unique look at where fresh and saltwater meet. It’s a refreshing stop that captures the essence of Rhode Island’s coastal charm.

3. Point Judith Lighthouse
Sights & LandmarksNarragansett, RI

Continue along the coast to one of Rhode Island’s most iconic landmarks: Point Judith Lighthouse in Narragansett. This octagonal beacon, standing since 1816, is a testament to Rhode Island’s rich maritime history. While you can’t enter the lighthouse itself, the grounds are perfect for snapping photos. Position yourself to capture the lighthouse against the backdrop of the Atlantic’s crashing waves -- it’s a classic New England scene. Be sure to read the nearby plaques detailing the lighthouse’s role in guiding sailors safely through Narragansett Bay for over two centuries.

By now, you’ve likely worked up an appetite. The Coast Guard House Restaurant, located in a historic former Coast Guard station, is a must-visit for both its local seafood dishes and panoramic ocean views. Savor Rhode Island-style calamari or fresh-caught lobster as you relax and watch boats glide by. On sunny days, the outdoor deck is especially inviting, offering unobstructed views of the coastline. Keep an eye out – you might catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the distance.

Then, as you approach the Claiborne Pell Bridge, you’ll get your first glimpse of Newport Harbor Light and the charming town of Newport. On a clear day, the views are unbeatable, with sailboats dotting the waters and the rugged shoreline stretching out ahead. Take your time crossing these architectural marvels, as the journey is just as beautiful as the destination.

Newport, also known as The City by the Sea, has been one of America's premier vacation destinations. Newport has more historic structures from the eighteenth century than any other city in America.
