Don’t Miss Rhode Island’s Winter Festival This February

Newport, Rhode Island, may be best known as an upscale summer destination, but there is so much to experience in the city all year. February is certainly no exception, especially with the much anticipated Newport Winter Festival right around the corner. This popular winter celebration is so epic it made it onto Only In Rhode Island's top 25 Best Things to Do in 2025 Bucket List. If you haven't attended in the past, this is the year to join in the fun. I am already counting down the days until it's festival time.   

Marking its 37th year in 2025, the Newport Winter Festival begins the day before Valentine's Day, Feb. 13, and runs until Feb. 22. That gives you 10 days to enjoy music, food, contests, and fabulous shows. The festival, which will take place in various locations throughout Newport, boasts a schedule jam-packed with more than 150 events, so many that there is not enough time to mention them all. However, I will tell you about some of my favorites.

If you crave great eats, the festival will feature delicious activities you shouldn't miss. On Saturday, Feb. 14, the annual Chili Cook-Off returns for its 28th year and will take place at the Newport Marriott Hotel. Head back to the hotel the following Sunday, Feb. 23, to enjoy another delicious event, as 13 local chefs go head-to-head in the popular Mac and Cheese Smackdown. Go with an empty stomach because there will be lots of mac and cheese to sample.

The Winter Festival will also feature entertainment, including live music, for all ages. The 2025 lineup includes such phenomenal tribute bands as Won't Back Down (Tom Petty), Bennie & The Jets (Elton John), and more. Children's jazz and puppet bands will perform for the younger crowd.

Clear your calendar for the wonderful shows throughout the festival. Find yourself mesmerized by the magic of David Garrity, Illusionist on Friday, Feb 20, and stay for stand-up comedy later that evening. The festival will also host several other entertainers, musicians, and comedians. Children's events include Bubblemania and a festive princess party. Don't leave without checking out the magnificent ice sculptures. 

Several events require tickets, which you can buy online or at the door. To save money, I suggest also purchasing a festival bracelet online or at a participating local business. Festival bracelets offer discounts on shows and activities and great deals at Newport restaurants.
