This Rhode Island Town Might Just Be the Best In New England

When it comes to charming seaside towns, Rhode Island easily beats out every other state (in our opinion, at least!). But if we had to choose one town to enter into a hypothetical "best town in New England" contest, we think there's an obvious choice – Bristol. Let us tell you why!

Though Bristol was first visited by colonists in the 17th century, it was incorporated in 1746 and transferred to Rhode Island (from Massachusetts) in 1767.

The site of two naval battles during the Revolutionary War, Bristol became known for its marine industry and particularly for being home to the boatbuilding company Herreshoff (and you can now visit the Herreshoff museum to learn all about the speedy sailboats they design).

The town, now home to around 22,000 residents, has plenty of splendid old mansions that have been amazingly kept up over the years.

It's a perfect town for intellectuals – the school system (shared with neighboring Warren) is excellent, and the town is home to Roger Williams University.

Strolling through the historic downtown will take you right back in time, and you'll absolutely love the town's cute shops and restaurants.

It's certainly a patriotic place, too – Bristol's Fourth of July celebration is the longest continually running one in the entire nation, and everyone in town gets in on the fun.

Between the natural beauty of its setting and the gorgeous historic homes, this town is a photographer's paradise.
