We recently brought you the ultimate Eastern Pennsylvania waterfall road trip, we didn't want to leave out the rest of the state, so here's the epic Western Pennsylvania waterfall road trip. We'll begin about an hour outside Pittsburgh, on the Ohio border at Quakertown Falls, and circle counterclockwise around Pittsburgh. The total trip is about eight hours of driving time. Consider making it a weekend journey, so you have time to hike and enjoy each location. Here's the Google Maps route for your use.
1. Quakertown Falls
Let's begin our waterfall road trip in Western Pennsylvania with a stunning multi-tiered waterfall. Quakertown Falls is located in Hillsville, about an hour outside Pittsburgh and one mile from the Ohio state border. The 50-foot waterfall can be a bit tricky to find because it is not clearly marked by any sign or official trail. Look for a steep, dirt runoff from Route 224.
2. Cucumber Falls
Cucumber Falls is only one of the gorgeous sights you'll find in Ohiopyle State Park. The park is excellent for hiking, biking, camping, and water sports like white water rafting. If you're really dedicated to the waterfall hunt, you can also admire the Ohiopyle Falls.
3. Linn Run State Park
The most well-known waterfall at Linn Run State Park is Adams Falls, which you can access by taking the appropriately named Adams Falls Trail. There are other waterfalls here too, such as the pictured Fish Run Falls.
4. Jackson Falls
Jackson Falls consists of a series of three gorgeous waterfalls that can be found on Rattling Run. One of the falls is over 20 feet; the one above it is five feet, and the lower falls is 10 feet.
5. Freedom Falls
Freedom Falls is located on Shull Run and is a bit of a hike to reach. It's worth the trip, however - Freedom Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the area.
6. Springfield Falls
Springfield Falls, located about 40 miles away from Freedom Falls in Leesburg, is also much easier to locate. The waterfall cascades down 20 feet, and it's perfect all year round.
7. Big Run Falls
Big Run Falls is a unique location on our trip because the waterfall is manmade. and can be found in New Castle's Cascade Metropark. The park used to be an amusement park.
