This Scenic 188-Mile Drive Just May Be The Most Underrated Adventure In Pennsylvania
Washington’s Trail in Pennsylvania offers a scenic drive filled with historic sites and natural beauty, following the path of George Washington.
Adventure comes in so many forms – whether we’re meandering through the forest on a scenic hiking trail or we’re kayaking along the river. Pennsylvania was practically made for adventures. Washington's Trail, for example, is a scenic drive that will take you past some fascinating and beautiful sites. It might just be, in fact, the most underrated adventure in Pennsylvania.
Follow the same path that George Washington once did on the 187-mile Washington’s Trail, a scenic drive that will take you to several historic destinations. Stop along the way, or simply follow the trail and enjoy the scenery.
Plans for a National Historic Trail, which runs from Williamsburg, Virginia to Waterford, Pennsylvania, are currently in the works.
The scenic drive follows Washington’s travels through the area throughout late 1753 and early 1754, beginning at Fort Necessity in Farmington, where the French and Indian War began.
If you’re not in a hurry, Fort Necessity is near a slew of attractions including Laurel Caverns, Ohiopyle State Park, and Fallingwater.
Following your time in Fallingwater, you’ll drive to Downtown Pittsburgh. For some of the best views of the city, take the Monongahela Incline or the Duquesne Incline to the top of Mount Washington.
Mount Washington is dotted with quaint shops and restaurants, so you might want to explore a bit before hitting the road again.
Washington’s Trail also passes through Harmony. History buffs will definitely want to stop at Harmony Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the rich history of the small Western Pennsylvania town.
Outdoor lovers may want to carve out time to go on a scenic hike at Moraine State Park. Kayaking and boating on Lake Arthur, and sunbathing on the two sandy beaches are popular at the state park in Western Pennsylvania.
Washington’s Trail ends at Fort LeBoeuf French & Indian War Museum. The free-admission museum is open seasonally from May 1 through October 31 annually.
Find days hours and more information on the Fort LeBoeuf French & Indian War Museum website.
Doesn't this sound like the ultimate adventure?
