9 Things That Should Be On Everyone’s Pennsylvania Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Remember how much fun it was going on scavenger hunts when we were kids? We'd grab that piece of paper, with the list of things we had to uncover and start making a plan of how we were going to find them all. If it's been a while since you've been on an adventure, gas up or charge the car; roll down the windows, and hit the road. You might not have to travel very far, if you're lucky, to check off all of the items on this scavenger hunt in Pennsylvania.

1. A state park

With 124 state parks in Pennsylvania, we're never lacking adventures. That makes a state park a natural choice for any scavenger hunt. The hard part is deciding which one to check off our list first.

2. Wawa and/or Sheetz

Depending on what side of the state you live in, you'll either frequently run across Wawa or Sheetz. Pennsylvanians are typically fiercely loyal to their favorite. Both are perfect for filling up our tanks and, even if we don't need gas, we can't go wrong with the hoagies and other goodies sold at both Pennsylvania icons.

3. A covered bridge

With more than 200 covered bridges (down from 1,500 in their heyday) across Pennsylvania, chances are pretty good we'll come across one in our travels, making it a natural addition to a scavenger hunt.

Did you know Pennsylvania is home to the most remaining covered bridges in the United States?

4. An oversized roadside attraction

Keep an eye out when you're driving through Pennsylvania because you never know what you're going to see. Maybe a massive shoe like the Haines Shoe House (now an Airbnb) in York, or the Koontz Coffee Pot in Bedford.

5. A turnpike rest stop

Whether we live in Pennsylvania or are simply passing through, we've all driven the turnpike at least once, and that usually means pulling over at a rest stop to stretch our legs, maybe looking at the map on the wall, and grabbing a quick bite to eat. A road trip without a break at a rest stop? It's practically unheard of.

6. A waterfall

Chasing waterfalls in Pennsylvania is easy. After all, we've got hundreds - both unnamed and named - across the state. Finding one to cross off of your scavenger hunt shouldn't be too difficult.

Did you know Ricketts Glen State Park's Falls Trail passes 22 waterfalls, including the 94-foot Ganoga Falls? (It's the tallest waterfall in the park.)

7. A drive-in movie theater

Pile the whole family - or your best buds - into the car and set off in search of one of Pennsylvania's drive-in theaters. There's really no better way to spend an evening than under a starry sky, eating popcorn and other goodies, and catching a double feature. Pennsylvania's home to nearly 30 drive-in movie theaters.

Did you know Pennsylvania lays claim to the oldest drive-in in Pennsylvania? Shankweiler's Drive-In Theatre in Orefield opened in 1934.

8. An old-school ice cream shop

Living in a state known as the Snack Food Capital of the World means most of us like goodies, so it's only natural that an old-school ice cream shop would be on any scavenger hunt. From ordering a cold treat from the Snowman in Portersville to pulling over at one of countless seasonal roadside ice cream stands, we're never too far from a sweet treat in Pennsylvania.

9. An out-of-state-license plate

We've all played the license plate game, right? When we're on a long drive through Pennsylvania, we start looking for license plates from other states - West Virginia, Ohio, New York, Michigan, and sometimes even Ontario - and whoever finds the most wins. It's a fun way to break up the monotony of a long drive.
