This Little-Known Waterfront Town Is One of the Most Charming in Pennsylvania

Discover a little-known waterfront town in Pennsylvania with a historic Main Street, with the banks of the Susquehanna River beckoning you to explore.

Pennsylvania is one of my favorite states when it comes to natural beauty, from the peaceful countryside to the sprawling state parks and rolling mountains, but there's one thing it doesn't have too much of: waterfronts. The Keystone State is landlocked, and you'll have to go to nearby New Jersey to enjoy the seashore. But the state's beautiful rivers and lakes are nothing to sneeze at, and there's a little-known waterfront town in Pennsylvania that's well worth the visit.

Less than half an hour west of Lancaster, one of my favorite towns anywhere, you'll find Marietta. Located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, this laid-back town of just under 3,000 people is home to a stunning Main Street full of historic buildings, a great dining and lodging scene, and proximity to beautiful natural spots, making it an ideal destination for a couple's getaway or a hiking expedition. Many people haven't discovered this hidden gem yet—which means it's waiting for you.

Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Pennsylvania Is So Charming

Marietta, Pennsylvania is one of those towns that most people have never visited, but everyone who does can't stop spreading the word. Like many towns in the Keystone State, it has a rich history from its industrial past. While the rail lines in Marietta are only frequented by freight trains today, the historic train station is now a welcome center and museum, the beginning of a journey through this riverfront town's past.

Strolling Along Marietta's Main Street

Main Street Marietta is a beautiful place, and the welcome center will fill you in on the historic spots to see through the town. Many of the houses lining the street have century-old designs that have been repaired and restored over the decades, adding a wonderful old-fashioned vibe to the town. The small town also has a surprising number of great restaurants and hotels, including The Bank House, a historic bank that has been converted into an Airbnb.

What To See and Do in Marietta

Marietta is surrounded on both sides of the river by beautiful nature, and it's an ideal spot for those who love the great outdoors to explore. Just across the river, you'll find Wizard Ranch Nature Preserve, a peaceful landscape filled with quiet trails.

Of course, the star attraction here is the Susquehanna River, one of the most beautiful waterways in Pennsylvania. The entire town is surrounded by it, and you'll have an incredible view anywhere you look. For a unique adventure nearby, the White Cliffs of Conoy—formed from nearby quarry activity in the past—are accessible via a short hike from Koser Park.

Marietta is the kind of place that doesn't just welcome you; it beckons you to come back every time you leave. This small town is ideal for an overnight stay, which allows you to hike the area and stay a night at one of the town's charming inns, but a visit to Marietta can also easily be combined with a trip to nearby Lancaster—the town is even accessible by Lancaster's bus service. Make sure to enjoy a meal at the area's spectacular Shady Maple Smorgasbord if you're coming from Amish Country!
