The Waterfall Day Trip Near Portland You Simply Must Take

If you have already explored the most popular waterfalls in Oregon and want to try a new hike, Umbrella Falls, located in the Mt Hood National Forest, is a great place to start. Featuring sweeping mountain views, lovely wildflower fields, and a formidable workout, this is the ultimate waterfall day trip from Portland.

The trail begins at Hood River Meadows Trailhead, on the southeast flank of Mt. Hood. It takes just a few minutes on the trail before the views of the mountains and meadows open up before you.

This 4.6 mile trail features a vivid display of wildflowers throughout July and August that is pretty intense.

The lupine fields are massive and color the meadows with their bright purples and pinks.

Along the trail, which climbs a little over 800 feet throughout, Mt Hood peeks through the trees around the twists and turns of the trail.

The trail is rated as easy, and considered to be family friendly. Because of its location, it is rarely crowded, making it a perfect place to enjoy a quiet hike.

Umbrella Falls is the main destination, and it is a stunner. Plan on leaving early so that you make the 2-mile hike to the falls for lunch. You are going to want to stay and enjoy it for a bit.

Hike up a side trail to the top of the falls, and you will have an obstructed, but amazing, look at Mt. Hood up close.

A shallow pool at the bottom of the falls is perfect playground for kids, and a bridge makes for great viewing of the falls and access to surrounding trails.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking at the trailhead.
