Are you familiar with the Williamson River in Oregon? Oregon is full of rivers and this one does not get the credit or fame that it deserves. It's about 100 miles long and it provides over half of the water inflow to giant Klamath Lake. On its way to Klamath Lake, it passes through the town of Chiloquin, a town of about 800 people. Chiloquin is a pleasant small town to visit on a summer day and is a perfect place to stop when exploring this area. The Williamson River winds its way through the area surrounding the small town of Chiloquin. Although this small town is not far from Crater Lake, few people visit it, but it's a great place to spend a summer day.
The town itself is quite small with a population of well under 1,000 residents.
You might stop at the Potbelly Cafe for breakfast. It's one of the only restaurants in town.
Currently, it serves breakfast five days a week but check online for hours. It's a great way to start one of the best day trips in Oregon.
If you arrive a bit later, you might stop at The Mystic Grill in Chiloquin for lunch or dinner. This spot is known for its very large and tasty burgers - especially the Hippo Burger and the Bigfoot Burger.
Once you've had a bite to eat, you should head to the river. Williamson River Access Park will give you up-close-and-personal access to it.
This river is known as a great fishing spot. Fly fishing is especially popular here.
You'll find picnic tables in this park and you can set up for a few hours and relax.
If you want to see the river from another spot, head north to Collier State Park for more idyllic river settings.
There's a logging museum there if you'd like to learn a bit more about the history of the area. you don't find that in many Oregon day trip destinations!
History buffs and train enthusiasts will also enjoy a visit to the Train Mountain Railroad Museum.
It's the world's largest model railroad with over 35 MILES of 7.5 gauge track on 2,200 acres.
This is supposed to be an outdoor adventure, but if you want to stop at the Kla-Mo-Ya Casino to try your luck for a little while, we won't tell anyone.
You might also want to stop at Henzel Park while you're in Chiloquin. It's on the shores of Klamath Lake. You can enjoy the views while contemplating the fact that half of all the water you see came from the Williamson River!
And, if you head over to the other side of Klamath Lake, you can visit the Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. That's Mount McLoughlin in the background.
The Williamson River is the heart and soul of Chiloquin, though. You'll love watching this river flow on by on a relaxing summer day.
