This Oregon Town Is Perfect for a Winter Weekend of Skiing and Spa Treatments

There’s much more to this charming town than first meets the eye.

Winter in Oregon transforms the state into a wonderland of natural beauty, where snow blankets ancient forests, mountain peaks shine under crisp skies, and icy waterfalls glisten from their quiet, frosty alcoves. From the rugged coastline to the volcanic highlands, winter adventures await around every corner! But while bigger names like Bend and Mount Hood draw the crowds, Oregon's underrated corners deliver just as much, if not more, unhurried winter magic.

When it comes to winter getaways, Detroit, Oregon (named after the iconic Motor City in Michigan), has a way of sneaking up on you. Perched on the edge of the Cascade Mountains and surrounded by snow-draped forests, this tiny lakeside town in Northwest Oregon may not shout its charms from the rooftops, but spend a weekend here, and you'll wonder how it managed to stay off your radar. Whether you're a fan of snowy trails, steamy hot springs, or just a cozy weekend escape, Detroit is proof that even small towns can pack in plenty of off-season beauty! Here's how to spend an unforgettable weekend in this underrated winter town.

Day One

First, you'll want to dive right into exploring Detroit’s natural playground the moment you arrive. Even when the lake level drops in winter, Detroit Lake offers stunning views and serene walks along its snowy shores. The surrounding forest trails transform into peaceful paths for snowshoeing and brisk winter hiking.

If you plan to camp, the Detroit Lake State Park Loop at the Detroit Lake State Recreation Area is a solid choice for exploring. Its easy-to-navigate paths wind through towering firs and offer glimpses of the frosty lake. If not, head to the Detroit Flats or Mongold Day Use Areas for fantastic views and snowy beach-strolling opportunities.

After a crisp morning outdoors, it's only a 30-minute drive to Breitenbush Hot Springs, a relaxing retreat in the woods. The natural geothermal pools, ranging in temperature from warm to toasty, are the perfect way to soak away the winter chill! The retreat is entirely off-grid and offers overnight stays in cozy, rustic cabins for those wanting a longer escape. You'll also find yurts and camping spaces to choose from as well. While there, you can explore the surrounding snowy trails or book a massage at their wellness center. Reservations are required, with an optional lunch included for day-use visits.

If you're not already staying at Breitenbush or winter camping at Detroit Lake, end your day at The Lodge at Detroit Lake. Each room has its own fun personality, a kitchenette, and easy access to community areas and everything that this waterfront town has to offer.

Day Two

Day two in Detroit is all about the area's icy wonders. After a breakfast of your choice, make the sub-one-hour drive to Hoodoo Ski Area, a local favorite for its manageable size, affordable lift tickets, and laid-back vibe. Whether you’re into downhill skiing, snowboarding, or Nordic trails, Hoodoo delivers all the snowy fun without the hassle of overcrowded slopes! For a unique experience, come back later to try their night skiing under the stars.

If skiing isn’t your speed, head to nearby snow parks in the Santiam Pass area. Snowshoeing trails like the Maxwell Sno-Park Loop offer a peaceful way to explore the forest blanketed in snow. Bring a thermos of coffee or tea, take your time, and enjoy the rejuvenating hush of winter.

On your way back to Detroit, take a detour to one of the region’s stunning winter-accessible waterfalls. There are many to choose from, but Marion Falls is a standout, just a short drive and moderate hike from the Marion Lake Trailhead. The waterfall takes on an ethereal quality in winter, with icicles glistening along the rocky edges. It’s a must-see for photographers or anyone who loves frozen beauty! You can also wander alongside Downing Creek to immerse yourself in lush waterfront beauty or pick from any number of trails in the Willamette National Forest.

With so much icy beauty to explore, it's clear that winter in Detroit has its own special magic. But this tiny town is special for a few other reasons, too.

In 2020, the Santiam Fire swept through Santiam Canyon, burning over 400,000 acres and devastating the town of Detroit and surrounding counties over the coming weeks. While the community is still healing, this tiny town has shown remarkable resilience, like the evergreen forests surrounding it. The welcoming charm of the area remains, with snow-covered landscapes and cozy ski lodges offering a chance to experience the warmth of this outdoor gateway community as it rebuilds with hope and strength. Today, rows of tiny seedlings have sprung up, and hardy foliage stands have returned. Dining options are currently limited in town, but are readily available with a quick drive, with many new eateries and former favorites nearing the final stages of completion.

While Detroit isn't a name you hear too often in travel circles, there’s something special here that’s hard to find elsewhere: the thrill of a good hike paired with the relaxation of a hot spring soak or the joy of carving turns through fresh powder. Don't forget the warmth of a crackling fire that you can enjoy right after! Detroit is a town where you can truly slow down and savor winter. And sometimes, the best winter escapes are the ones that feel like your own little secret!
